3D Modeling & Rigging for Games

Blender, MagicaVoxel, Mixamo — making and prepping 3D assets for games.

3D content creation focused on game-ready output: low poly counts, proper UVs, baked PBR textures, optimized rigs. Pairs with 3D modeling tools (general), PBR texture libraries, mesh retopology, mesh processing, free asset stores, voxel tools, and animation & mocap. For 3D scanning workflows that feed into games see gaussian splatting and photogrammetry.

Modeling

  • Blender — free, GPL, the universal 3D suite. Modeling, sculpting, UV, texture paint, rigging, animation, simulation. Game-export presets via glTF, FBX. The default for almost every indie pipeline in 2026.
  • Maya — paid (~$2,000/year), AAA standard for animation rigs.
  • 3ds Max — paid, AAA standard for environment art.
  • Cinema 4D — paid, motion-graphics-leaning but used for stylized game cinematics.
  • modo — paid, modeler-favorite.

Sculpting

  • ZBrush — paid (subscription), AAA hi-poly sculpt standard.
  • Blender Sculpt mode — free, has closed most of the gap.
  • Nomad Sculpt — paid iPad sculptor.

Texturing / PBR

  • Substance Painter — paid (sub or perpetual via Steam). The PBR texturing standard.
  • Adobe Substance Designer — paid, procedural materials.
  • Mari — paid, used in film / AAA.
  • ArmorPaint — OSS Substance Painter alternative; paid binary, free source.
  • Quixel Mixer — free, but Quixel is being absorbed into Fab (Epic's marketplace) — the Mixer roadmap is uncertain.
  • See PBR texture libraries for input materials.

Voxel modeling

Auto-rigging

  • Mixamo (Adobe) — free, browser-based. Upload a humanoid mesh, get an auto-rig + a library of free mocap animations. The single best free resource for character animation.
  • AccuRIG (Reallusion) — free, more advanced than Mixamo; integrates with Character Creator.
  • Auto-Rig Pro — paid Blender addon, the indie standard for higher-quality rigs.
  • Rigify — Blender's built-in modular auto-rigger; free.

Retopology

See mesh retopology. Game retopo specifically:

  • Blender quad remesher + manual retopo.
  • Quad Remesher (exoside) — paid Blender / Maya / 3ds Max plugin.
  • TopoGun — paid retopo specialist.
  • InstantMeshes — free OSS auto-retopo.
  • ZRemesher — inside ZBrush.

Asset baking / optimization

  • xNormal — free, classic high→low normal map baker.
  • Marmoset Toolbag — paid, baking + look-dev + 3D portfolio rendering.
  • Substance Painter — has bakers built in.
  • Blender Bake — free, in-engine.

Format / pipeline

  • glTF / GLB — the default game-asset interchange in 2026; Khronos standard, both engines and editors agree.
  • USD (Pixar) — gaining as a scene format; Unreal 5 imports natively, Unity has packages.
  • FBX — Autodesk legacy but still a daily-driver.
  • OBJ — minimal, no animation, no PBR.
  • Mixamo → Blender → glTF is the canonical free character pipeline.
  • See 3D format converters for general format work.

Pick this if…

  • Default modeling/animation: Blender.
  • Free auto-rig + animations: Mixamo.
  • Hi-poly sculpt, AAA quality: ZBrush (paid) or Blender Sculpt (free).
  • PBR texturing: Substance Painter (paid) or ArmorPaint (free build).
  • Retopo: Quad Remesher (paid) or InstantMeshes (free).
  • Voxel: see voxel tools.
