Electronic Signatures

E-sign platforms — open source self-host and free-tier SaaS.

For full contract lifecycle (drafting, redlining, renewals) see Contract Management. For PDF generation / templating see PDF & Documents.

Open source / self-host

  • Documenso — modern, TypeScript / Next.js; AGPLv3 self-host plus hosted free + paid tiers. The default OSS pick in 2026 if you want DocuSign-shape e-sign you can self-host.
  • DocuSeal — competitor; AGPLv3 (or paid commercial license); cleaner template builder; hosted free tier. Strong alternative to Documenso.
  • OpenSign — open source; AGPLv3; hosted free tier; PDF-template-driven workflows.
  • SignServer — Java; long-running; for high-volume / regulated PKI signing rather than human-facing e-sign workflows.
  • PrivacyIDEA + EJBCA — for certificate-based signing infrastructure (eIDAS qualified signatures), not consumer-style e-sign.

Hosted (free tiers worth using)

  • Documenso Cloud — generous free tier; most teams stay on it.
  • DocuSeal Cloud — generous free tier.
  • SignWell (formerly Docsketch) — free tier (3 docs / month); polished UX.
  • Dropbox Sign (formerly HelloSign) — small free tier (3 docs / month per user); paid above.
  • Signaturely — small free tier.
  • eSignatures.io — pay-per-use ($0.49 / contract); no monthly fee.
  • jSign — free tier.
  • DocuSign — incumbent; expensive; what enterprise procurement expects.
  • Adobe Acrobat Sign — bundled with many Adobe accounts; enterprise-friendly.
  • PandaDoc — combines proposals + e-sign + payments; paid.
  • Concord — contract management with e-sign built in; see Contract Management.
  • Proposify — proposal-flavored.

eIDAS / qualified signatures (EU)

  • DocuSign eIDAS, Adobe Acrobat Sign eIDAS — both support QES with trust-service-provider integration.
  • Namirial, Buypass, Yousign (FR), Signicat — European TSPs; required for legally-binding QES in regulated EU contexts.
  • EJBCA + your own TSA — fully self-hosted QES is feasible but expensive in compliance overhead; only worth it if you're a TSP yourself.

Niches

  • Real-estate / mortgage: dotloop, DocMagic — paid; deeply integrated with MLS / loan systems.
  • HR onboarding: most HRIS (Gusto / Rippling / BambooHR) include built-in e-sign for offer letters / I-9 / W-4.
  • Notarization: Notarize, Proof.com — remote online notarization; paid.

License watch-outs

  • Documenso, DocuSeal, OpenSign — all AGPLv3. Self-host fine; if you're embedding e-sign as a feature in a commercial SaaS, get a commercial license or use the hosted product.

Pick this if…

  • Default OSS, modern stack: Documenso (or DocuSeal — flip a coin).
  • Cheapest pay-per-use, no subscription: eSignatures.io.
  • Enterprise procurement asked specifically: DocuSign or Adobe Sign.
  • You need eIDAS QES: Yousign / Namirial / Signicat through DocuSign or Adobe.
  • You only need a few signatures / month, free: SignWell free or Documenso Cloud free.
