AI PDF Q&A (NotebookLM)

NotebookLM, Claude Projects, ChatGPT, ChatPDF — ask questions of your PDFs and EPUBs.

The single biggest reading-tooling change of 2024-26: AI now answers questions on the document in front of you. NotebookLM is the killer app — free, Google-backed, and uniquely good at multi-document grounding with audio overviews. For local / private alternatives see Self-Host AI / LLM and AI / LLM. For document management see Document Management.

Hosted (the default in 2026)

  • ★ ★ NotebookLM (Google) — free; upload up to ~50 sources per notebook (PDF, Google Docs, Slides, web links, YouTube transcripts, audio); grounded Q&A with citations into the documents; Audio Overview generates a 10-min two-host podcast about your sources; Mind Maps + Briefing Docs since 2024-25. The killer reading app of 2024-26.
  • Claude Projects — paid + free; upload PDFs / EPUBs (200K-token context per Project); ask questions; share Projects. Best raw reasoning quality on long docs in 2026.
  • ChatGPT (with file upload) — paid + free; uploads + retrieval; GPTs for project-specific PDFs.
  • Gemini (gemini.google.com) — free + paid; same idea; integrates with Drive PDFs natively.

PDF-first AI tools

  • ChatPDF — paid + free; the original; tight UX; less differentiated since NotebookLM.
  • Humata — paid + free; document Q&A; team-flavoured.
  • AskYourPDF — paid + free; ChatGPT plugin.
  • PDF.ai — paid + free.
  • Adobe Acrobat AI Assistant — paid (Acrobat add-on); built into Adobe Reader.
  • SciSpace / Elicit — see Research & Citations; paper-flavoured.

Self-host / local

  • Open WebUI + Ollama — free OSS; runs Llama / Mistral / Qwen / Gemma locally; supports document upload + RAG. See Self-Host AI / LLM.
  • AnythingLLM — free OSS; document-Q&A-focused; embeds via Ollama / OpenAI / Anthropic.
  • LM Studio — free; desktop; runs local models; chat-with-PDF UI.
  • PrivateGPT / GPT4All — early FOSS local Q&A; less active in 2026 but still works.
  • Khoj — free OSS; local-first PDF / Markdown / Obsidian Q&A.

Whisper / audio overlap

  • See Transcription — pair NotebookLM's Audio Overview with Whisper transcripts for round-trip "PDF → audio → searchable transcript" workflows.

Patterns

  • Upload a stack, then ask comparative questions. NotebookLM's superpower: "compare how papers A, B, C define X". Single-doc tools can't do this.
  • Audio Overview for commute reading — generate, download, listen on a walk. Surprisingly effective.
  • Cite-everything mode — NotebookLM and Claude both attach source citations; trust them more than the unsourced ChatGPT answer.
  • Local for confidential docs — health records, legal, contracts → Open WebUI + local model.
  • Don't paste personal data into hosted tools you don't trust.

Pick this if…

  • Default, free, multi-document: NotebookLM.
  • Highest-quality reasoning on long docs: Claude Projects.
  • Already in ChatGPT: ChatGPT file upload + custom GPTs.
  • Local / private: Open WebUI + Ollama or AnythingLLM.
  • Inside Adobe Reader workflow: Acrobat AI Assistant.
