Podcast & Voice Production

Auphonic, Descript, Riverside.fm, Cleanfeed, SquadCast — record, edit, level voice content.

Voice / podcast production has its own toolchain distinct from music DAWs — focused on remote recording, dialog leveling, transcript-driven editing, and loudness normalization. Pair with transcription for STT, vocal-stem-separation for cleanup, and selfhost-podcast-hosting for distribution. For general audio editors see audio-editors. For routing audio into recording on Win / Mac see audio-routing-win-mac.

Remote recording (separate-track-per-guest)

  • Riverside.fm — paid (free trial); browser-based; records local lossless tracks per guest, uploads after; video + audio. The "double-ender" experience without the friction. Default for podcast remote recording in 2026.
  • SquadCast — paid (free trial); now part of Descript. Per-guest local recording; audio + video.
  • Cleanfeed — free for personal (paid Pro for multi-guest / video). Browser-based; one of the best free quality options.
  • Zencastr — paid freemium.
  • Cast (cast.do) — paid podcast-focused.
  • StreamYard — paid; live-streaming-leaning but records.
  • Discord / Zoom + local recording — fallback; lossy and fragile, but free.

Transcript-first editing

  • Descript — paid (free tier with 1 hr STT/mo). Edit audio / video by editing the transcript — delete words, cut takes, "Studio Sound" AI cleanup, voice cloning ("Overdub"), screen recording. The 2024-26 default for podcast / YouTube editors.
  • Adobe Podcast / Premiere Enhanced Speech — bundled with Creative Cloud.
  • Auphonic Audio Inspector — see below; not transcript-edit but loudness / dialog focus.

Audio cleanup / leveling

  • Auphonic — free tier (2 hours/mo; pay-per-hour above). Loudness normalization (broadcast standards), dialog leveling, denoising, multi-track auto-balancing, chapter / metadata, ID3 tagging. The standard pre-publish pass. Has an API.
  • Adobe Podcast Enhance Speech — free web tool (paid for higher quotas in CC). Cleans up bad-room recordings shockingly well.
  • iZotope RX — see vocal-stem-separation; paid; the studio-grade option.
  • FFmpeg loudnorm filter — free CLI EBU R128 loudness norm; scriptable.
  • r128gain / ffmpeg-normalize — free Python wrapper around loudnorm.

Voice plugins (single-mic dialog cleanup)

  • Waves Clarity Vx / Vx Pro — paid AI noise / reverb removal.
  • Krisp — paid (free tier); cross-app noise suppression.
  • NVIDIA Broadcast — free for RTX users; noise suppression / reverb removal.
  • RNNoise — BSD; ML-based noise suppression; the OSS root of many of the above.
  • Reaper ReaFir — free with Reaper; classic spectral subtraction.
  • C-Suite C-Plug-Ins — closed paid voice tools.

Local podcast DAWs

  • Audacity / Tenacity — see audio-editors; the entry-level free podcast editor.
  • Reaper — see daws-free-oss; $60 lifetime; multitrack podcast workflow with great rendering.
  • Hindenburg Pro — paid; designed specifically for radio / podcasts; auto-leveling, voice profiler.
  • Adobe Audition — paid; broadcast / podcast standard on the paid side.
  • Logic Pro — see daws-paid-flagship; great single-host recording on Mac.

Voice cloning / TTS for podcasters

  • See transcription for ElevenLabs, OpenAI TTS, F5-TTS, Piper.
  • Descript Overdub — bundled.
  • PlayHT — paid; podcast-leaning voice library.

Hardware mic refs

  • Shure SM7B — XLR; the podcast standard (needs a Cloudlifter / Fethead for clean preamp gain).
  • Shure MV7+ / MV7X — USB / XLR hybrid; cheaper SM7B-alike.
  • Rode PodMic / PodMic USB — XLR / USB.
  • Rode NT-USB Mini / NT-USB+ — USB condenser; great for desk podcasters.
  • Audio-Technica AT2020 / AT2035 — affordable studio condenser.
  • DBX 286s / Cloudlifter CL-1 — preamp helpers for SM7B-class mics.
