Game Localization

Crowdin, Lokalise, I2 Localization, POEditor — translation workflows for games.

Game-specific localization: glossary management, character-set support, font fallback, in-context translator UIs, gendered grammar, voice-line synchronization. Pairs with i18n for the broader landscape, game UI frameworks, and audio middleware for VO. For full landscape see Game Development.

Translation management systems

  • Crowdin — paid + free OSS plan. Web platform with translator UI, glossary, in-context, machine-translation pre-fill. Strong for games via Unity / Unreal connectors.
  • Lokalise — paid, polished, strong API.
  • POEditor — paid + small free tier.
  • Phrase (formerly PhraseApp) — paid.
  • Transifex — paid.
  • Smartling — paid AAA / enterprise.
  • Weblate — free OSS self-host, libre option.

Engine-side

  • I2 Localization (Unity) — paid, the long-standing Unity standard. CSV/Google Sheets workflows.
  • Unity Localization Package — free, official Unity, smart strings, table-based.
  • Unreal Localization Dashboard + Localization Tools — free, official Unreal. Manifests, archives, gather/import/compile.
  • Godot Translation Server — built in, CSV import.

AI translation (the 2024+ wave)

  • DeepL — paid API, excellent Romance/Germanic quality.
  • GPT-4 / Claude / Gemini — paid APIs, surprisingly strong on game tone if prompted with context. Many indies pre-translate with LLMs and then have native speakers polish.
  • FastTr / Mate Translate — paid, "translation memory + AI" stacks aimed at games.

Font / character set support

  • Noto fonts — free, Apache, cover essentially every script. The default for global games.
  • Source Han Sans / Serif — free, CJK.
  • TextMesh Pro (Unity, free with Unity 6) — handles Unicode well; bake atlas per language or use Dynamic SDF.
  • Unreal text Mesh / Slate text — handle Unicode but watch for atlas cap on Asian fonts.

Voice-over / dubbing

  • See game audio — FMOD/Wwise have language switching baked in.
  • ElevenLabs / Replica — paid AI voice for indie dubbing.

Pick this if…

  • Unity, paid: I2 Localization (mature) or Unity Localization (free, modern).
  • Unreal: built-in Localization Dashboard.
  • Godot: built-in Translation Server.
  • Translator-managed workflow: Crowdin (free OSS plan, generous) or Lokalise.
  • Self-host translation server: Weblate.
  • Indie LLM-prefilled translations: DeepL or LLM APIs, then native polish.
