Audio Interfaces & Hardware

Focusrite, MOTU, RME, UA Volt, class-compliant USB, Dante / AVB / AES67 — picking the audio I/O.

A reference for the hardware sitting between your mics / instruments and your DAW. Class-compliant USB interfaces work driverless on Mac / Linux / iOS; Win benefits from a vendor ASIO driver (see audio-routing-win-mac for ASIO4ALL when none exists). Audio-over-IP (Dante / AVB / AES67) is the pro install-world counterpart. For USB-MIDI controllers see midi-routing-tools.

USB audio interfaces (home / project studio)

Entry tier ($100-200)

  • Focusrite Scarlett Solo / 2i2 / 4i4 (4th gen, 2023-26) — class-compliant USB, great preamps for the price, Hi-Z guitar in. The default budget interface in 2026. Bundles include Ableton Lite + plugin promos.
