The honest reality

This is a mostly-paid category. The OSS scene around outbound is thin — credible sales engagement requires sender-reputation infrastructure, deliverability monitoring, and contact databases that don't have free equivalents at scale. Free tiers are real but limit-bound; expect to graduate within months once outbound works.

  • Listmonk — bulk newsletter only; not a sequencer.
  • Open source CRMs (Twenty, EspoCRM, SuiteCRM) — see CRM; none are sequence-first but several have cadence-shaped automation.
  • Nothing OSS matches the depth of Instantly / Smartlead / Apollo as of 2026 — outbound stays mostly paid.

Patterns to know

  • Use a separate domain for cold outbound (e.g., getyourcompany.com) — protects your main domain's deliverability if a campaign gets flagged.
  • Multiple sending mailboxes per domain — sustainable volume per inbox is ~30–50 / day; rotate.
  • Warm before sending — 2–4 weeks of warmup before real campaigns.
  • Verify lists — un-verified email addresses crater deliverability.
  • Personalize the first line — generic templates hit spam folders and have ~0% reply rate.
  • CAN-SPAM / GDPR / CASL — comply per region. EU B2B cold outbound is legally fraught (legitimate-interest balancing test).

Pick this if…

  • Default cold-outbound stack, 2026: Instantly or Smartlead + a warmup tool + Apollo for data.
  • Just need a few emails / month found: Hunter Free or Apollo Free.
  • Inbound + outbound combined, want one tool: Apollo or HubSpot Sales Hub.
  • Enterprise, predictable forecasts: Outreach or Salesloft.
  • Very small budget, OSS-leaning: Mautic + Hunter Free + manual personalization. It works, slowly.
