Focus & Pomodoro Apps

Forest, Stretchly, Session, Centered, Be Focused, focus timers and break reminders.

Tools that put a timer between you and your phone / screen. For website / app blocking see prod-distraction-blocking. For a daily-planning ritual instead of pomodoro alone see prod-task-gtd-apps.

Pomodoro timers

  • Forest — paid one-time on iOS / Android (~$4); plant-a-tree gamification; the most-loved phone-side pomodoro app.
  • Be Focused — free + paid (Pro); Mac + iOS; simple Pomodoro with stats.
  • Focus To-Do — free + paid; Pomodoro + tasks combined; cross-platform.
  • Pomofocus — free web; literally pomofocus.io — no install.
  • Toby Pomodoro / Marinara Timer — free browser timers.
  • Pomodone — paid + free; integrates with Todoist / Trello / Asana.

Mac power tools

  • Session — paid Mac/iOS; gorgeous; deep-work tracking + analytics + mindful start/stop.
  • Centered — paid; pomodoro + ambient music + "flow coach"; subscription.
  • Focus (heyfocus.com) — paid Mac; pomodoro + website blocking together.
  • Flow — paid Mac; minimalist menu-bar pomodoro.

Break reminders (more important than pomodoro for some people)

  • Stretchly — free OSS; cross-platform (Win/Mac/Linux); micro-breaks + long breaks + customisable. The default break reminder.
  • Time Out (Mac, free) — long-running classic break reminder.
  • EyeLeo (Win, free) — eye-strain breaks.
  • Workrave (Linux/Win, free OSS) — old but works.

Daily planning that includes pomodoro

  • Sunsama, TickTick Premium, Akiflow — see prod-task-gtd-apps; they bake pomodoro into daily planning rather than treating it as a separate tool.

Hardware timers (worth a mention)

  • Time Timer — physical visual countdown; popular for ADHD / kids.
  • Pomodoro Tracker dice / cubes — flip-to-start; analog and joyful.

Patterns that actually work

  • 25-min focus / 5-min break (classic) is fine — but most people benefit more from a 90-min ultradian block + 15-min real break.
  • Single-tab browsers during a focus session — pair with prod-distraction-blocking.
  • Timer + a "now playing" task — Sunsama / TickTick / Things have this; bare-pomodoro alone often isn't enough.
  • Don't gamify too hard — Forest is fine, but XP-grinding focus apps tend to lose value once novelty wears off.

Pick this if…

  • Phone-side, gamified, you want one app: Forest.
  • Mac power user with stats: Session.
  • You actually need break reminders, not focus timers: Stretchly (free, OSS).
  • You want pomodoro + website blocking in one paid app: Focus (heyfocus.com).
  • You'd rather build it into daily planning: Sunsama or TickTick — see prod-task-gtd-apps.
