Garmin Watches & Connect IQ

Garmin Connect, Connect IQ apps, FirstBeat metrics, HRM-Pro — and why endurance athletes still default here.

Garmin in 2026 is the endurance-athlete default: weeks-long battery on the Fenix / Forerunner / Epix lines, deep multisport, ANT+ + BLE dual-broadcast for every sensor, and a respected (if dated) ecosystem in Garmin Connect IQ. Watches are paid hardware ($200-$1100); the Garmin Connect app and Connect IQ store are free.

Sister sections: Apple Watch, Oura & Whoop, Open-Source Wearables, Running & Cycling, HRV & Heart Rate, Stryd & Power, Training Plans, Home Assistant Add-ons for the Garmin → HA bridge.

Why Garmin still wins for endurance

  • Battery life — Fenix 8 Solar = ~28 days smartwatch, ~80 hours GPS; Apple Watch Ultra 2 = ~3 days. For ultras, multi-day backpacking, or "wear it 2 weeks between charges," nothing else competes.
  • Sensor breadth — ANT+ + BLE; talks natively to every chest strap, power meter, foot pod, indoor trainer, fishfinder, mountain bike radar, dive computer.
  • Multisport / triathlon — proper transition handling, swim metrics, open-water GPS, T1/T2 timer.
  • Mature training-load model (FirstBeat-derived) — Training Status, Acute Load, Training Readiness, Recovery Time, Race Predictor, VO2max trend, Endurance / Hill Score (newer Fenix / Forerunner / Epix). Imperfect, but the most respected daily-use endurance model on a watch.
  • Maps — full topo + turn-by-turn on the Fenix / Epix / Tactix / Enduro / Forerunner 965 / Edge bike computers.

The lineup (2026 simplified)

  • Forerunner (run / triathlon focus): 165, 265, 270, 570, 970. The 965/970 added AMOLED in 2024-25.
  • Fenix / Epix / Tactix / Enduro (multisport flagships): Fenix 8, Epix Pro Gen 2, Enduro 3, Tactix 7. Multi-week battery; full topo maps.
  • Edge (bike computers): Edge 540 / 840 / 1040 / 1050; the cycling default; maps, ClimbPro, eBike support.
  • Vivoactive / Venu (lifestyle): friendlier UX, AMOLED, leaner than Fenix.
  • Instinct (rugged budget): MIP screen, multi-week battery, lower price.
  • Lily / Vivosmart (lifestyle bands): smaller, lighter.

Garmin Connect (the app)

  • Garmin Connect — iOS / Android / web; free with a Garmin device; full activity log, training metrics, sleep, body battery, social challenges. Genuinely solid web view in 2026.
  • Connect Web — desktop dashboard; FIT/GPX export per activity; bulk export less convenient (use Garmin DB FOSS for full local mirror).
  • Garmin Coach — free; adaptive plans for 5K / 10K / half / full marathon (with Jeff Galloway / Greg McMillan / Amy Parkerson-Mitchell coaches).
  • Strava sync — bidirectional; one-toggle in Connect. See Running & Cycling.
  • Apple Health / Health Connect — exports steps + activities; sleep / HRV require apps like HealthSync (paid Android) or HealthFit (paid iOS).

Connect IQ — the store

  • Connect IQ — Garmin's free store for watch faces, data fields, widgets, full apps; Monkey C SDK; large amateur dev community.
  • Must-have free Connect IQ apps:
    • dwMap / FaceIt! — better watch faces.
    • Stryd — running power data field; see Stryd & Power.
    • HRV Logger / EliteHRV companion — HRV stash.
    • Komoot, RidewithGPS, TrailForks, Yelp — companion glances.
    • myWindsock — wind + weather context for cyclists.
    • CIQ Plays — golf shot tracking.

Sensors that pair (any brand, ANT+ / BLE)

  • HR straps — ★ Garmin HRM-Pro Plus (running dynamics + dual-band); ★ Polar H10 (best chest strap overall, see HRV); HRM-Dual, Wahoo TICKR, Coospo.
  • Power meters (cycling) — Quarq, Stages, 4iiii, Favero Assioma. ANT+ + BLE.
  • Power meter (running) — ★ Stryd; Coros POD 2; Polar Stride Sensor.
  • Smart trainers / indoor cycling — Wahoo KICKR, Tacx Neo, Saris H3 — see Indoor Cycling.
  • Speed / cadence — Garmin Speed Sensor 2, Cadence Sensor 2, Wahoo RPM.
  • Smart scale — ★ Garmin Index S2 (paid); body comp pushes to Connect.
  • Bike radarVaria RTL515 / RTL516 (paid); the safest "what's behind me" gadget cyclists have ever had.

FOSS / data-export ecosystem

  • GarminDB — FOSS Python; pulls every activity / metric from Connect into a local SQLite mirror; the foundation for any Quantified Self DIY Garmin pipeline.
  • Runalyze — FOSS PHP; imports Garmin activities; the self-host Strava replacement. See Running & Cycling.
  • garmin-connect (Python / Node) — unofficial Connect API libs.
  • fit-tool / fit-cli — parse FIT files.
  • GoldenCheetah — FOSS desktop power-data analytics; Garmin import; the cycling power nerd's tool of choice.

Home Assistant integration

  • garminconnect HA integration (HACS) — pulls steps, HR, sleep, body battery into HA; one of the most popular HACS integrations.
  • See Home Assistant Add-ons.
  • Pair with InfluxDB / Grafana for Garmin dashboards.

Cost / license honesty

  • Watches: Forerunner 165 ~$200; FR 970 ~$750; Fenix 8 ~$1000; Edge 1050 ~$700.
  • Garmin Connect / Coach — free with hardware purchase; no subscription.
  • Connect IQ apps — most free, some paid one-time.
  • No subscription tax unlike Whoop / Oura. Hardware is the cost.
  • GarminDB / Runalyze / GoldenCheetah — all FOSS.

Pick this if…

  • Endurance athlete: Forerunner 270 / 570 / 970 (run-focused) or Fenix 8 (multisport flagship).
  • Cyclist: Edge 540 / 840 + Varia RTL515.
  • Long battery / outdoor: Fenix / Enduro / Instinct.
  • Want full data export: GarminDB → SQLite → Grafana.
  • Self-hosted Strava replacement: Garmin → Runalyze.
  • iPhone-only, want polish: see Apple Watch instead.
  • Recovery-first wearable: see Oura & Whoop.
