CNC Files & Communities

Where to find ready-to-cut CNC files, V-carve clipart, model libraries, and the active hobby CNC communities — Shapeoko, OneFinity, Maslow, plasma, plus general 3D model sources.

The "I just want to cut something this weekend" supplement to CAM: file marketplaces, free model sources, V-carve clipart packs, and the user communities that ship the practical know-how. For upstream design tools see Mechanical CAD and 2D Drafting. For 3D printing model libraries — many overlap.

Free CAD / DXF / STL repositories

  • GrabCAD Community Library — free login; massive engineering CAD library with STEP/IGES/STL downloads. The serious-mechanical-parts source. Quality varies; license is "free for personal use" with some commercial allowances.
  • Printables.com — free; primarily 3D-print models but lots of "STL → CNC" candidates (V-carve plaques, signs, brackets). Active community.
  • Thingiverse — free; older, weaker moderation; still huge. Look for "CNC" tag.
  • Hackaday.io — free; community engineering projects with sources.
  • Cults3D / MyMiniFactory / Pinshape — free + paid mix; some "CNC-cuttable" tags. STL-heavy.
  • Inventables Project Library — free; X-Carve / Easel projects, MDF / plywood sign templates.
  • Carbide 3D Project Library — free; Shapeoko-tested projects with bit selections and MDF dimensions.

Sign work / V-carve clipart

  • Vectric Free Clipart Library — free with Vectric ownership; thousands of V-carve and 3D models for VCarve / Aspire.
  • Vectric paid clipart packs — paid; Design & Make, ScanNCut, etc. Sign-shop staples.
  • Carveco Clipart — free with Carveco subscription; comparable to Vectric's library.
  • DXF Fans / DXFforCNC / DXF Forever — paid + free DXF marketplaces oriented at plasma / laser sign work.
  • Etsy "CNC files" / "DXF files" sections — paid, individual; huge variety, quality varies.
  • Cncfreaks / Cnczone marketplace — community-shared files.

Plasma / sheet-metal specific

  • Plasmastencils.com / PlasmaSpider / CNC4Plasma — paid + free; plasma-cut sign and decor files.
  • OnlinePlasmaArt — paid; commercial plasma-art DXFs.
  • MetalCloak / EnviroLite patterns — vehicle-specific.

3D model sources for STL → CAM

  • Sketchfab — free + paid; downloadable 3D models, many CC-BY. Good for sculpts.
  • TurboSquid / CGTrader — paid; high-poly models; usually need decimation before CAM.
  • MyMiniFactory paid scans — paid; museum-scan sculptures, terrain.
  • GrabCAD STEP files — for parametric mechanical work.

Active hobby CNC communities

  • Shapeoko Community Forum (community.carbide3d.com) — the most active hobby-router community; Shapeoko-specific but generally useful.
  • OneFinity CNC Forum (forum.onefinitycnc.com) — vendor-hosted; very active.
  • Sienci Labs Forum / Discord — LongMill community.
  • Inventables Community — X-Carve focus.
  • CNCZone (cnczone.com) — old-school; has subforums for every machine class, retrofit, plasma, lathe. Slower than Reddit but the canonical "I'm retrofitting a Bridgeport, where do I start" reference.
  • Maslow CNC Community — Maslow vertical CNC builders; small but active.
  • r/hobbycnc — Reddit; broadly active; mixed quality.
  • r/CNC, r/Machinists, r/Lathe — Reddit; pro-leaning.
  • Practical Machinist — pro-leaning; for serious iron / production questions.
  • LinuxCNC Forum — the FOSS retrofit community.
  • Plasma table communities: Langmuir Community, PlasmaSpider, Mach3 plasma subforums on CNCZone.

YouTube / video reference

  • Carbide 3D / Sienci / OneFinity / Inventables YouTube — vendor channels with setup and project content.
  • NYC CNC (John Saunders) — pro-but-accessible Tormach + Haas content; retrofit videos.
  • Winston Moy / Carbide 3D's Winston — Shapeoko-focused.
  • Marius Hornberger — German woodworking CNC.
  • This Old Tony / Blondihacks / Stefan Gotteswinter — manual machining with CNC content.
  • Joe Pieczynski — old-school Mach3 + machining tips.
  • Avid CNC's videos — Mach4 + sheet routing content.
  • Langmuir Systems YouTube — plasma-table-specific.

Discord / chat communities

  • Shapeoko Discord, OneFinity Discord, Sienci Discord — vendor-tied, very active.
  • FluidNC Discord, grblHAL Discord — firmware-developer-adjacent; technical.
  • LinuxCNC Matrix / IRC — FOSS development chat.
  • Maker Made / MakerMade Discord — for the MakerMade-controlled hobby builds.

File-format pitfalls

  • DXF version mismatches — the universal 2D format that breaks every other day. Save as R12 / R14 if downstream tooling complains.
  • STL non-manifold meshes — STL files from Sketchfab / TurboSquid often have inverted normals or holes. Run through MeshMixer, Blender, or Meshmixer before CAM. See Mesh Repair.
  • STEP for parametric / mechanical — always preferable to STL when the source is parametric.
  • SVG for sign / plasma 2D art — most CAM tools accept SVG; Inkscape is the canonical editor.

Pick this if…

  • Looking for sign / V-carve files: Vectric / Carveco free libraries (if you own those tools), Etsy for one-offs, DXF Fans for plasma.
  • Mechanical part for a fixture or tool: GrabCAD.
  • 3D shape for a router 3D-finishing project: MyMiniFactory or Printables, then mesh repair.
  • Stuck on a build, need real human help: the vendor forum (Shapeoko / OneFinity / Sienci) plus CNCZone for harder retrofit questions.
  • Plasma table specifically: PlasmaSpider + Langmuir community + DXF Fans.
