The 2024–26 inflection: AI-assisted animation has arrived. Cascadeur physics-aware keyframing, Move.ai markerless mocap from a phone, Rokoko Vision (free) AI mocap from video, Plask Motion browser AI mocap. Indies can now do mocap quality that was studio-only five years ago.

2D skeletal rigs

  • Spine 2D (Esoteric Software) — paid, $69 Essential / $299 Pro / $2,200 Enterprise (revenue tier required). The 2D animation industry standard. Mesh deformation, IK, skins, runtimes for every engine. Most "wow this 2D character looks alive" examples are Spine.
  • DragonBones — free OSS, Tencent-stewarded. Spine-shaped tool, exports JSON consumable by Pixi, Phaser, Cocos. Less polished than Spine but free.
  • Live2D Cubism — paid, free for non-commercial / small revenue. The VTuber and visual novel 2D-from-2D-art standard. Pair with VTubing avatars.
  • Spriter Pro — paid, older Spine alternative.
  • Creature — paid, mesh-based, more complex than Spine.

3D rigging

3D animation / keyframing

  • Blender — free, the default animator for indies.
  • Maya — paid AAA standard.
  • Cascadeur — physics-aware AI keyframing. Free up to indie revenue caps, paid Pro for studios. AutoPosing fills in physically plausible secondary motion. A genuine workflow shift in 2024–26.
  • iClone (Reallusion) — paid, fast-iteration 3D character animation; pairs with Character Creator for assets.

Mocap (markered)

  • Rokoko Smartsuit Pro II — paid suit (~$2,500), software has been free for solo creators for a while; Rokoko Studio Plus for studios.
  • Xsens / Movella MVN — paid AAA-grade.
  • OptiTrack, Vicon — paid optical (cameras + reflective markers); studio installs.
  • Captury Live — paid markerless multi-camera.

Mocap (markerless / AI, the new wave)

  • Move.ai — paid markerless mocap from phones / standard cameras. Multi-cam for higher quality, single-cam for quick capture. Major disruption since 2023.
  • Rokoko Visionfree AI mocap from video; pair with paid Rokoko Studio for cleanup.
  • Plask Motion — browser-based AI mocap, free tier.
  • DeepMotion Animate 3D — paid AI mocap from video.
  • RADiCAL — paid AI mocap.

  • ActorCore (Reallusion) — paid library, pairs with iClone.

  • Audio2Face (NVIDIA Omniverse) — free, AI lipsync.
  • JALI Research / Speech Graphics — paid AAA lipsync.
