Photo Print, Book & Publication
Print labs, photo books, layout software — Saal Digital, Whitewall, Affinity Publisher, Scribus.
Getting photos off the screen and onto paper. Print labs differ wildly in color, paper choice, and price; book-layout software ranges from drag-and-drop lab apps to professional InDesign. For the soft-proof and ICC profile workflow that should precede print see Photo Color Management; for raw export see Photo RAW Editors.
Photo labs (US-focused)
- ★ Bay Photo — pro-focused US lab; great prints, metal / acrylic, customer support; ICC profiles published. Long-time pro favorite.
- MPix — consumer arm of Miller's Lab; quick turnaround, decent quality for the price.
- Nations Photo Lab — pro and consumer tiers.
- Adoramapix (now AdoramaPix / PrintIcon) — paid, US.
- Smartpress — fine art books, paid US.
- Mixbook / Shutterfly — consumer; convenience > color accuracy.
Photo labs (Europe-focused)
- ★ Saal Digital — Germany; ★ for fine-art and photo books; reliable color, well-priced. Free soft-proof workflow with ICC profiles.
- ★ Whitewall — Germany; high-end metal / acrylic / hahnemühle; pricey but consistent.
- CEWE / Albelli — consumer EU; convenience focus.
- Lalalab — small-format consumer.
- Pikto / Photobox — UK / EU consumer.
- ProPrints UK — pro lab.
Photo labs (worldwide / shipping)
- WhiteWall, Saal Digital, Bay Photo all ship internationally for serious work.
- Hahnemühle Certified Studios — premium fine-art print, lookup map on Hahnemühle's site.
- The Printspace (UK) — pro fine-art, ships EU + US.
Book / album layout (paid commercial)
- ★ Adobe InDesign — Creative Cloud subscription; the industry-standard book / magazine layout tool. Steep learning curve, unmatched typography.
- ★ Affinity Publisher 2 — Canva-owned, one-time purchase. Real InDesign competitor; integrates with Affinity Photo / Designer; the no-subscription pick. Solid for photo books.
- Lightroom Classic Book module — included; lays out photo books and exports to Blurb directly. Limited but easy.
- QuarkXPress — paid; legacy; small user base.
- Blurb BookWright / Blurb BookSmart — free with Blurb account; lays out books for Blurb's printing service.
- Adobe Photoshop Lightroom doesn't have a book module (that's Classic only).
Book layout (free / OSS)
- ★ Scribus — GPL, cross-platform. The OSS InDesign; fully capable for photo books / magazines, color-managed, PDF/X output. Slightly clunky UI but powerful.
- LibreOffice Draw — viable for simple layouts.
- LaTeX with
photobook/memoirpackages — niche, but reproducible and version-controllable.
Lab-specific apps (free, lock you in)
- Saal Design Software — free, Win/Mac; lays out for Saal's products only. Polished.
- CEWE Photoworld / Albelli Designer — free, lock you in to that lab.
- Mixbook web — browser-based.
- Apple Photos Print Projects — was killed in 2018; third-party services (Motif, Mimeo) extended it briefly; mostly gone.
Print-on-demand (POD)
- Printful / Printify — POD for prints, posters, merch with photos; integrates with Shopify.
- Society6 / Redbubble / Fine Art America — sell prints / merch, they handle fulfillment; you keep IP.
- Saatchi Art — fine-art marketplace.
- Etsy + Printful integration — DIY fine-art shop.
Common gotchas
- Soft-proof in the lab's ICC profile before sending — Saal, Whitewall, Bay Photo all publish profiles. Otherwise expect color surprise.
- Embed sRGB or AdobeRGB on export — labs interpret untagged files unpredictably.
- Resolution at print size — 240–300 DPI at finished size. A 16×24" print needs ~3,840×5,760 px.
- Bleed and trim — 3 mm bleed each side for books; lab-specific. Read their template.
- Spread vs. page-flat books — layflat books have a visible gutter on hinge; standard binding hides about 8 mm of gutter content.
- PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3 — the safe export PDF preset for press.
Patterns to know
- Test print one image first — don't commit a 100-page book before you know the lab matches your monitor.
- Order one bound copy as a proof — most labs offer a discount on a single proof copy.
- Black point compensation on for prints — preserves shadow detail.
- Sharpen for output, not for screen — output sharpening is print-size and viewing-distance dependent. Lightroom / Photoshop both have output-sharpening presets.
What's changing in 2024–2026
- AI-laid-out books — Lightroom and Capture One both shipped AI book templating; results are decent but not differentiated.
- Direct-to-square POD growth — Squarespace + Pixieset + Printful chains for photographers who sell prints.
- Hahnemühle / Canson digital papers — new substrates with better OBA-stability; check soft-proof matches your lab's update cycle.
- NFC-tagged prints — niche; embed a tap-to-portfolio link.
