Photo RAW Editors & Develop
Lightroom-shape develop apps for raw photography — OSS, paid, and pro tethered.
The "develop" half of a photographer's workflow — opening .CR3 / .NEF / .ARW / .RAF files, applying tone, color, and lens corrections, and exporting masters. Different from the designer-side raster apps in Raster Image Editors (GIMP / Krita / Photopea) and the developer-pipeline tools in Image Editing. For library / culling / DAM see Photo DAM & Management; for self-host hosting see Self-Hosted Photos & Media.
OSS raw developers (free)
- ★ darktable — the modern OSS Lightroom-shape developer. GPL, Win/macOS/Linux. Scene-referred workflow, parametric and drawn masks, excellent local adjustments. The 5.x line (2025–2026) added ML-assisted masks, better color science, and a much-improved UI. The default OSS pick in 2026.
- ★ RawTherapee — long-running OSS raw tool; GPL. More technical / "every knob exposed" than darktable. Best-in-class demosaic options (AMaZE, RCD, DCB) and capture-sharpening; recent releases are closing the local-adjustments gap.
- ART (Another RawTherapee) — RawTherapee fork that ships with a simpler UI, smarter defaults, and integrated CIECAM color appearance. Great middle ground if RT feels too dense.
- digiKam — combined library + raw editor; GPL. Useful when you want one app for both DAM and develop. See Photo DAM & Management.
- Filmulator — niche film-emulation raw developer; OSS.
Commercial raw developers (paid)
- ★ Adobe Lightroom Classic — the industry default catalog + develop app. Subscription only (Photography Plan, ~$12/mo with Photoshop). No perpetual license. Most published tutorials, presets, and plugins target it.
- Adobe Lightroom (CC / cloud) — sibling product, cloud-first, simpler UI, weaker local controls, same subscription.
- ★ Capture One — the pro / studio choice; tethered shooting is best-in-class, color science is loved by fashion / portrait shooters. Subscription or perpetual; expensive. Pro-only Fujifilm / Sony / Nikon / Canon "Pro" variants exist alongside the universal edition.
- ★ DxO PhotoLab — perpetual license; the best optics modules and lens corrections in the business. DeepPRIME XD denoise (see AI Denoise & Upscale) is the headline feature.
- ON1 Photo RAW — perpetual or subscription; AI-heavy; Lightroom-alike with masking AI.
- Luminar Neo (Skylum) — paid subscription; AI sky replacement, relight, generative; not a primary develop app for most pros but popular with hobbyists.
- AfterShot Pro (Corel) — older Lightroom alternative; perpetual; minor user base.
- Pixelmator Pro — macOS-only; raw support is competent for casual use; one-time purchase.
- Photomator (Pixelmator team, now Apple-owned as of 2024) — Mac/iPad/iPhone raw editor; subscription. Tightly integrated with Apple Photos library.
Mobile raw
- See the dedicated Photo Mobile Editing page for Lightroom Mobile, Halide, Darkroom, Snapseed, VSCO.
Headless / batch / scripted develop
- darktable-cli — render
.xmpsidecars to TIFF/JPEG from the command line. Great for batch. - rawtherapee-cli — same idea for RT.
- dcraw / LibRaw — see Raw SDKs. Use these when you need to embed raw decoding into a pipeline, not as a develop app.
What's changing in 2024–2026
- darktable 5.x ML masks — segmentation-based subject / sky / skin masks; closes a real gap with Lightroom's AI Select Subject.
- On-device AI denoise on Apple Silicon — Photomator and Lightroom both run high-quality neural denoise locally; no more cloud round-trip.
- JPEG-XL output — darktable, RawTherapee, Photomator can export JXL; Adobe still cautious. See Photo File Formats.
- Adobe Generative Remove / Generative Fill — Lightroom Classic finally has cloud-AI inpainting on par with Photoshop.
- Capture One subscription push — perpetual licenses still sold but priced to nudge people to subscribe.
Pick this if…
- Free, modern, OSS Lightroom replacement: darktable.
- OSS, every parameter exposed, technical: RawTherapee (or ART for the friendlier UI).
- Industry-standard, tutorials everywhere, willing to subscribe: Lightroom Classic.
- Studio / fashion / tethered work, money no object: Capture One.
- Best lens corrections + AI denoise, no subscription: DxO PhotoLab + DxO PureRAW.
- Mac / iPad photographer in the Apple ecosystem: Photomator.
- Batch-process raws in a pipeline: darktable-cli or LibRaw.
