Emulators (Sega, Xbox, Arcade, DOS, Vintage PC)

The not-Nintendo, not-Sony part of the emulator landscape: Sega's whole console history, Microsoft's Xbox / Xbox 360, the arcade preservation projects, and the engines for adventure games and DOS / vintage PCs. Sega

• ★ Flycast — GPL-2.0 OSS; Win/Mac/Linux/Android. The Dreamcast + NAOMI + Atomiswave emulator (Reicast continuation). Excellent accuracy, libretro core. The Dreamcast default.
• Redream — closed; free + paid Premium ($6 one-time for HD upscaling). Polished Dreamcast UI; hobbyist-friendly.
• DEmul — closed Win-only; legacy Dreamcast / NAOMI. Flycast has overtaken it.
• ★ Genesis Plus GX — non-commercial OSS; libretro core. The default Genesis / Mega Drive / Master System / Game Gear / SG-1000 emulator.
• Kega Fusion — closed freeware; legacy. Genesis Plus GX has eclipsed it but Kega's standalone UI is still beloved.
• PicoDrive — MAME-license OSS; lightweight Sega 16-bit / 32X emulator; popular on handhelds.
• Saturn — Mednafen / Beetle Saturn — GPL OSS; libretro core. Saturn emulation has been the white whale; Mednafen is the accuracy benchmark.
• YabaSanshiro — GPL Saturn emu; lighter weight than Mednafen.

Xbox / Xbox 360

• xenia — BSD OSS; Win-first. Xbox 360 emulation. Honest flag: alpha quality; per-game compatibility varies wildly; expect to use the canary branch. Fast-moving.
• xenia-canary — community canary fork that ships compatibility patches faster than upstream.
• Cxbx-Reloaded — GPL OSS; original Xbox emulation; experimental.
• xemu — GPL OSS; original Xbox emu fork of Cxbx-Reloaded; better accuracy and active dev.
• Honest flag: original-Xbox emulation has improved a lot in 2023-25 (xemu) but Xbox One / Series have no emulation effort worth mentioning.

Arcade

• ★ MAME — GPL-2.0 OSS; the arcade preservation project. ~50,000 supported machines, archival-grade accuracy on most. Standalone UI or libretro core. Pair with verified ROM hashes from ROM management — MAME ROMs are version-locked.
• ★ FB Neo (FinalBurn Neo) — community OSS; libretro core. Lighter than MAME, focused on Neo-Geo / CPS / Cave / Konami arcade boards. The default for handhelds and modest hardware doing arcade.
• MAMEdev's modern UI overlays (BGFX shaders, HLSL) — built into MAME; the CRT-on-arcade-cabinet experience.

Adventure games / engines

• ★ ScummVM — GPL-3.0 OSS; Win/Mac/Linux/Android/iOS. Reimplements the engines for hundreds of point-and-click adventures (LucasArts SCUMM, Sierra AGI/SCI, Wintermute, AGS, etc.). Use your original game's data files. Indispensable for the genre.
• ResidualVM — merged into ScummVM in 2020; was the 3D-adventure-engine sibling.

DOS / vintage PC

• ★ DOSBox Staging — GPL-2.0 OSS; Win/Mac/Linux. The active community fork of DOSBox; the default DOS gaming emulator in 2026. Modern audio backends, graphical post-processing, scaler shaders.
• DOSBox-X — GPL-2.0 OSS; alternative DOSBox fork emphasizing Win 3.x / 9x compatibility and low-level PC hardware emulation.
• DOSBox SVN — original DOSBox; effectively superseded by Staging and X.
• Boxer — Mac-native DOSBox wrapper; legacy but loved.
• eXoDOS / eXoWin3x — curated game collections + frontend for DOSBox Staging on Win — see ROM management.

Vintage PC hardware

• ★ 86Box — GPL-2.0 OSS; Win/Mac/Linux. Cycle-accurate emulation of vintage IBM-PC-compatible hardware (8088 → Pentium III). The Win 3.x / 95 / 98 nostalgia machine.
• PCem — GPL-2.0 OSS; predecessor to 86Box; lower dev velocity post-86Box fork.
• MartyPC — Rust OSS; cycle-accurate 8088-era PC emulator, more research-tool than gaming.

Apple / Atari / classic micros

• MiniVMac — GPL OSS; classic Mac (68k) emulator.
• Basilisk II / SheepShaver — GPL OSS; Mac OS 7-9 emulators.
• Atari800 — GPL OSS; Atari 8-bit.
• Stella — GPL OSS; Atari 2600.
• VICE — GPL OSS; Commodore 64 / VIC-20 / PET / Plus 4. The C64 default.
• fs-uae / WinUAE — GPL OSS; Amiga.

Pick this if…

• Dreamcast / NAOMI: Flycast.
• Genesis / Mega Drive: Genesis Plus GX (libretro) or Kega Fusion if standalone-only.
