Web Clippers & Capture Tools

Obsidian Web Clipper, Markdownload, Hypothesis, Joplin Clipper — getting the web into your PKM.

Capture is where most PKM workflows leak — the article you saw, the tweet that struck you, the page you wanted to revisit. The 2024-25 launch of Obsidian's official Web Clipper changed the default. Pair with pkm-overview-methodologies and pkm-capture-voice-photo; see also prod-knowledge-management-readwise, reading-highlight-aggregators-readwise, selfhost-bookmarks-rss.

Per-tool web clippers

  • ★ ★ Obsidian Web Clipper ★ — official browser extension; launched late 2024, OSS (MIT). Markdown-on-disk; configurable templates; route to folders; the new default for Obsidian users.
  • Joplin Web Clipper — official; OSS (AGPL); part of Joplin's polish since long before Obsidian's. See pkm-joplin-standard-notes.
  • Markdownload — free OSS browser extension; converts page to markdown; agnostic of any specific PKM app — drop the markdown in any vault.
  • Logseq Reader / community clipperlogseq-copilot and similar extensions; less polished than Obsidian's.
  • Notion Web Clipper — official; sends to a Notion database.
  • Bear, Apple Notes, Evernote — all have official clippers; vendor-locked.
  • Org-protocol — Emacs-side; click a "clip to Org" bookmarklet, capture into an Org file. The OG.

Annotation-style clippers (highlight + clip)

Bookmark / read-later as capture

  • Karakeep (formerly Hoarder) — free OSS self-host; AI-tagged bookmarks; full-text search of clipped pages. See selfhost-bookmarks-rss.
  • Wallabag — free OSS self-host read-later; the OSS Pocket; great pipeline source for PKM.
  • Linkding / LinkAce / Shaarli — bookmark-only self-host options.
  • Pocket / Instapaper — paid + free hosted; classics.
  • Readwise Reader — paid hosted; the modern read-later.

Email-to-PKM

  • Forwarding inbox — most people set up notes@yourname.fastmail.com or similar; emails become inbox items in Obsidian / Logseq via a watcher.
  • Apple Mail / Gmail / Fastmail rules — auto-forward labelled mail to a capture inbox.
  • Notion's Email-to-Page — paid Notion feature.
  • Joplin email-to-note — Joplin Cloud feature; or self-host via Joplin Server + IMAP plugin.
  • n8n / Activepieces / Windmill — write a custom email → markdown → vault pipeline. See selfhost-automation.

Mobile capture

  • iOS Share Sheet → Obsidian / Logseq / Joplin / AnyType — every major tool has Share Sheet integration; the friction-floor on iOS.
  • Android intents — same idea; route the share to your PKM app.
  • Apple Notes Quick Note (free) — fastest possible "save this page" on Apple devices; later move into your PKM. See prod-note-taking-consumer.
  • Drafts (paid + free, iOS / Mac) — capture-first; "everything starts as text" — see prod-note-taking-consumer.

Capture templates that survive a year

  • Source URL + title + date + tag at minimum.
  • Highlights with context — quote + your own paraphrase + why it mattered.
  • Status fieldinbox, processed, referenced. Weekly review filters by status.
  • Don't structure too much upfront. Inbox flat; weekly review moves to topic.
  • Avoid plugin-specific syntax in clippings — keeping markdown plain helps when you migrate.

OSS-first defaults (2026)

  • ★ ★ Obsidian Web Clipper for Obsidian users.
  • ★ ★ Markdownload for tool-agnostic clipping.
  • ★ ★ Joplin Web Clipper for Joplin users.
  • Hypothesis for academic / annotation flow.
  • Karakeep for self-host bookmark + clip.

Failure modes

  • Capture without process. 800 unread clips in Inbox. Cap the inbox; weekly review drives the cap down — see pkm-daily-weekly-review.
  • Clipping the whole article — usually you only want the part that struck you. Highlight, don't full-page clip, when possible.
  • No source URL — clips without provenance are useless in 6 months.
  • Sync after capture — capture often happens offline; ensure your tool catches up before you delete from the source.

Pick this if…

  • Obsidian user: Obsidian Web Clipper (official, OSS).
  • Joplin user: Joplin Web Clipper.
  • Tool-agnostic: Markdownload + your editor of choice.
  • Academic / web annotation: Hypothesis.
  • Self-host bookmarks + read-later: Karakeep or Wallabag — see selfhost-bookmarks-rss.
  • Hosted read-later + highlights: Readwise Reader — see prod-knowledge-management-readwise.
