Local Video Generation

AnimateDiff, Mochi-1, LTX-Video, Hunyuan, Wan — what's actually feasible at home in 2026.

Local video generation in May 2026 is roughly where image generation was in late 2022 — usable, exciting, fast-moving, but rough at the edges and demanding on hardware. The honest framing: short clips (3–10 seconds) at 480–720p are achievable on Tier 3+ hardware; longer / higher-res / consistent-character work is still painful.

Models worth knowing

★ Hunyuan Video (Tencent, 2024)

  • 13B parameter open video model; impressive quality.
  • Apache 2.0 weights.
  • Needs significant VRAM; quantized GGUF makes it accessible at 24GB.
  • ★ A strong "best open video model" as of May 2026.

★ Wan 2.1 / Wan-AI (Alibaba)

  • 2025 release; open weights; competitive quality.
  • Apache-style license.

★ Mochi-1 (Genmo)

  • Released late 2024; Apache 2.0; strong motion fidelity.
  • 10B parameters; quantizes to ~16GB workable.

★ LTX-Video (Lightricks)

  • Real-time-ish video generation; smaller / faster.
  • Open weights; permissive license.

CogVideoX (Tsinghua)

  • Earlier (2024); still useful; smaller variants run on 12GB.

AnimateDiff

  • Animation extension to Stable Diffusion / SDXL. Adds motion to image-gen models.
  • Many community motion modules.
  • Lower quality than dedicated video models but accessible on smaller hardware.

Stable Video Diffusion (SVD)

  • Stability AI's image-to-video. Older (2023–24); still common in workflows.

Closed / paid for honest comparison

  • Sora (OpenAI) / Veo 3 (Google) / Runway Gen-4 / Kling / Hailuo — significantly better quality than open-weight in May 2026; closed, paid.
  • The gap is roughly "open is 12–18 months behind closed" on video, larger than the text gap.

What works in 2026 at home

  • 3–6 second clips at 480–720p with Hunyuan / Mochi-1 / LTX-Video on Tier 3+ hardware.
  • Image-to-video animation of an existing still — better than text-to-video for narrative / style consistency.
  • AnimateDiff for short loops / animations from existing image-gen workflows.
  • Img2vid for product / style demos — usable for content creators.

What doesn't work yet at home

  • Long-form (30+ second) coherent narrative video. Even closed models struggle here.
  • Consistent character / scene across cuts. Reference-image methods help but not solved.
  • High fidelity human faces close-up. Uncanny-valley territory.
  • Audio-synced video. Most open models are silent; audio gen is a separate workflow.
  • 4K / cinematic resolution. Possible via upscaling pipeline; native is far off.

Workflow patterns

  • ComfyUI is the front-end — every notable open model lands as a ComfyUI custom-node release within days.
  • Quantize aggressively — GGUF Q4 / fp8 of Hunyuan / Mochi makes the difference between "fits" and "OOM" on a 24GB card.
  • Frame-interpolation post-processing — RIFE / FILM / FFmpeg motion-compensated interpolation smooths short generations into longer-feeling clips.
  • Upscaling post-processing — Real-ESRGAN / Topaz Video AI for resolution.
  • Image-first, then animate — generate a strong still in SDXL/Flux, then img2vid to animate; better than direct text-to-video for art direction.

Hardware reality

  • Tier 1–2 (12–16GB VRAM): AnimateDiff, SVD, smaller video models, slow.
  • Tier 3 (24–32GB): Hunyuan / Mochi quantized, LTX-Video, decent quality.
  • Tier 4 (48GB+): Hunyuan full quality, longer clips, faster iteration.
  • Tier 5 (H100 / rented): the only realistic path to "comparable to closed-frontier output" — and even then the gap is real.

Cost-of-time

A 5-second 720p clip on a 4090 takes 2–10 minutes depending on the model and step count. Iterating to a clip you actually like takes many tries. Compare to Runway / Sora at 30 seconds wall-clock with monthly subscriptions. If you do this constantly, paid is often more practical; if you're privacy-bound or building a pipeline, local wins.

Pick this if…

  • One pick for local video gen in May 2026: ★ ComfyUI + Hunyuan Video (or Mochi-1).
  • Smaller hardware: AnimateDiff with SDXL.
  • Image-to-video on existing art: SVD or LTX-Video.
  • Best quality regardless of cost: rent an H100 on vast.ai and run open-weight at full precision; or pay for Veo / Sora / Runway / Kling.
  • You want easy fast results without the local pain: paid services.
  • You're patient and curious: local Hunyuan + ComfyUI; great hobby today, will be production-grade by 2027.
