Mobile Video Editing

CapCut Mobile, iMovie, LumaFusion, Splice, InShot — phone and tablet editors for short-form social and quick cuts.

The "I shot it on my phone, I'll edit it on my phone" tier. For desktop NLEs see Video NLE Editors. For AI auto-captions on social videos see Auto Captions (Whisper). For the codec / export side see Encoding & Codecs. For mobile streaming see Live Streaming Software.

Free / freemium consumer

  • CapCut Mobile — closed source, free; ByteDance-owned; iOS / Android / iPad. The most capable free mobile editor in 2026: AI b-roll, auto-captions, beat detection, speed ramps, keyframes, presets. Honest flag: data and uploaded content go through ByteDance servers; assume your edits, audio, faces are processed in cloud and may be retained. Treat as unsafe for confidential / corporate / journalism work. For personal social posts, it's the best free mobile editor — full stop.
  • iMovie — free; iOS / iPadOS / macOS; Apple-native; integrates with Photos; surprisingly capable for cuts, transitions, basic color, titles. The default for iPhone users who don't want CapCut.
  • VN Video Editor — closed source, free; iOS / Android / Mac / Win; surprisingly pro feature set free; growing fast in 2026.
  • CapCut for Creators — closed source paid; CapCut's enterprise-light offering; same data concerns.
  • InShot — closed source freemium; vertical-first; ad-supported free, paid removes ads + watermark.
  • YouCut — closed source freemium; Android-leaning lightweight editor.
  • Quik (GoPro) — closed source freemium; was free before GoPro paywalled it; auto-edit AI montages.
  • LumaFusion — paid (~$30 one-time + Pro IAPs); iOS / iPadOS (Android beta); the closest thing to a desktop NLE on a tablet — multi-track, color wheels, keyframes, ProRes, external monitor, Final Cut Pro project export. Default iPad pro pick.
  • Final Cut Pro for iPad — paid (~$5/month subscription, 2026); Apple-native; Live Multicam, magnetic timeline, ProRes RAW; integrates with FCP Mac.
  • DaVinci Resolve for iPad — free; full Resolve project compatibility; the iPad heavyweight (Apple Silicon iPad needed); cuts + color + Fairlight.
  • Splice (Bending Spoons) — closed source paid; iOS / Android; music-first short-form editor.
  • KineMaster — closed source freemium; Android-friendly multi-track.
  • PowerDirector Mobile — closed source freemium; Cyberlink port.
  • Filmic Pro / Filmic Firstlight — paid; pro-shooting (ProRes, log) on iPhone; not strictly an editor but the capture side of mobile pro workflows.

Specialty / AI-driven mobile

  • Captions (the app) — paid; AI talking-head editor; auto-zoom on speaker, AI captions; iPhone-first.
  • Submagic — paid; AI captions + emoji + b-roll for short-form; web-based but mobile-friendly.
  • Veed — paid free tier; web-based AI editing; mobile UI works.
  • CapCut auto-captions — bundled; the best free option (with the ByteDance flag).
  • Recall (formerly Wondercraft) — paid; AI-driven podcast / video repurposing.
  • Opus Clip — paid; long-form video → AI short clips; web with mobile dashboards.

Quick-share / Loom-shaped mobile

  • See Screen Recording for Loom Mobile, Tella Mobile.
  • Loom Mobile — free tier; record + share a link.
  • Tella Mobile — paid free tier.

Capture-side companions

  • Filmic Pro (iOS) — paid; manual log capture, focus pulls, ProRes recording on iPhone — the pro-iPhone shooter app.
  • MotionCam (Android) — free OSS; raw DNG video on supported Android phones.
  • Blackmagic Camera (iOS) — free; Blackmagic-flavored capture; ProRes; uploads to Blackmagic Cloud for Resolve roundtrip.
  • MoviePro — paid; iOS pro capture alternative.

Patterns

  • Shoot in your phone's native camera, edit in iMovie or LumaFusion: best for quality preservation; phone vendor codecs are HEVC / H.264 standardized.
  • Shoot in Filmic Pro or Blackmagic Camera, edit in LumaFusion / Resolve iPad: pro-shape pipeline; ProRes proxy on the device; full color in post.
  • Shoot in CapCut, edit in CapCut: fastest social path; lowest privacy bar.
  • Avoid CapCut for client / corporate / journalism work: the ByteDance data flow is real.
  • Use VN if you want CapCut features without the watermark/data baggage — VN's data practices aren't perfect either, but they're not ByteDance.

Hand-off to desktop

  • LumaFusion → FCP / Premiere XML — round-trip works.
  • Resolve iPad → Resolve Studio Mac/Win — same project file; designed for round-trip.
  • iMovie → FCP — bundled "Send to Final Cut Pro."
  • CapCut → desktop CapCut — cloud-synced.
