Digital Nomad & Coliving

Coliving / coworking networks, slow-travel volunteering, nomad-city stats, and the long-stay infrastructure for remote workers.

For monthly furnished rentals, see Hotel & Accommodation Search. For nomad-friendly bank accounts, see Currency, FX & Banking. For nomad insurance, see Travel Insurance. For data plans, see eSIM & International Data.

The post-COVID nomad market peaked around 2022–23, contracted in 2024 (some networks like Selina restructured), and stabilized in 2025–26 around a smaller set of well-run players plus widespread "any apartment + good Wi-Fi" individualism.

Coliving networks

  • Outsite — paid; ★ professional coliving in surf / city / mountain locations; clean spaces, fast Wi-Fi, weekly community events.
  • Selina — paid; ★ wide network but went through significant 2023–24 financial restructuring; verify current status of any specific property before booking.
  • Roam — paid; smaller, premium; Bali, Tokyo, London.
  • WiFi Tribe — paid (~$1500–$3000/mo); community-curated 1-month coliving cohorts.
  • Outpost — paid; SE Asia (Bali, Cambodia, Sri Lanka).
  • Sun and Co. — paid; Spain.
  • Hacker Paradise — paid; tech-flavored cohort coliving, 2–4 weeks per location.

Coworking networks

  • Selina Cowork, WeWork — paid; chain coworking.
  • Impact Hub — paid; social-impact-flavored coworking network.
  • Coworker.com — free directory; ★ for finding any coworking space anywhere.
  • Workfrom — free; rates cafes / coworking on Wi-Fi, noise, vibe.
  • Croissant — paid; pass-based access to multiple coworking spaces.

Nomad-specific tools

  • Nomad List — paid (~$200 lifetime, sometimes ~$30/mo); ★ for city statistics relevant to nomads — cost, Wi-Fi, weather, safety, "nomad score." Created by Pieter Levels; community-driven.
  • Remote Year — paid; year-long managed nomad cohort (~$2k/mo); for those who want it organized.
  • Wifimap — free; cafe Wi-Fi crowdsourced ratings.
  • Speedtest.net — free; ★ confirm Wi-Fi quality before committing.

Visas for nomads (2024–26)

The "digital nomad visa" category exploded post-2020:

  • Portugal D7 / D8 — €705 or so/yr proof of income; D8 is the official "digital nomad" visa launched 2022.
  • Spain Digital Nomad Visa — launched 2023; ~€2700/mo income required; tax benefits via Beckham Law possible.
  • Estonia e-Residency + Digital Nomad Visa — Estonia's flagship.
  • Croatia Digital Nomad Permit — €2300/mo income; up to 1 year.
  • Mexico — 4-year temporary residency relatively easy.
  • Costa Rica Rentista — proof of $2500/mo income.
  • Indonesia Bali "B211A" — semi-formal "second home" visa; rules shifted 2024–25.
  • Thailand DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) — launched 2024; 5-year multi-entry.
  • Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Italy, Latvia, Hungary — various nomad visas with €2k–€3.5k/mo income proofs.

Verify current rules before relocating; most require local tax registration after 183-day residency thresholds.

Slow travel / volunteering / work exchange

  • Worldpackers — paid (~$50/yr); ★ for volunteering for room and board — hostels, farms, eco-projects.
  • Workaway — paid (~$50/yr); similar; sometimes more rural / agricultural.
  • WWOOF (per-country chapters) — paid (~$30/yr); ★ for organic farm volunteering.
  • HelpX — paid; older platform, similar model.
  • Trusted Housesitters — paid (~$130/yr); pet-sit in others' homes globally; mature; ★ for free accommodation.
  • HouseCarers, MindMyHouse — alternatives.
  • Couchsurfing — paid + free; declined post-2020 monetization; less-active; verify with the host before relying.
  • BeWelcome — free, OSS, non-profit Couchsurfing alternative; small but ethical.

Nomad financial / admin

  • Wise multi-currency — see Currency, FX & Banking.
  • SafetyWing — see Travel Insurance.
  • Stripe Atlas / FirstBase / doola — paid; US LLC formation for nomads.
  • Xolo, Hellotax, NomadTax — paid; nomad tax services.
  • ProtonMail / 1Password — privacy / security stack basics.
  • NordVPN / Mullvad — see related self-hosted networking categories for Tailscale-style mesh patterns.

Nomad communities

  • Nomad List Slack / Telegram — paid (Nomad List membership).
  • Reddit r/digitalnomad, r/expats, r/IWantOut — free.
  • Twitter / X #buildinpublic, #nomadlife — declining; X / Bluesky split.
  • Facebook expat groups per city (still where most ground-truth happens locally).

Practical rules (2026)

  • Test the city for 1–2 weeks before committing 3 months. Wi-Fi, noise, day-to-day annoyances reveal themselves slowly.
  • Tax residency is not what most nomads think it is. 183 days isn't a universal rule; some countries claim residency at 90 days, some on first day if "center of life."
  • Business expenses + home office complications follow the LLC, not the location — get an accountant who handles nomads.
  • Time zone discipline matters. Living in UTC+8 while your team is in UTC-5 means working 9pm–4am or quitting.
  • Slow travel beats fast travel for productivity, sustainability, cost, and immune system.
  • Get the right visa. Tourist-visa long-staying is a common but legally fragile pattern.

Pick this if…

  • City stats / nomad community: Nomad List.
  • Coliving with built-in community: Outsite or WiFi Tribe.
  • Cheap accommodation in exchange for work: Worldpackers / Workaway / WWOOF.
  • Pet-sit your way around: Trusted Housesitters.
  • Long-stay visa: Portugal D8, Spain Nomad, Thailand DTV, depending on income / EU access.
  • Tax / admin: an accountant who specializes in nomads, full stop.
