Accessibility, TTS & Dyslexia
Bookshare, OpenDyslexic, VoiceOver, Voice Dream — accessible reading for low vision, blindness, dyslexia.
Free / open-source / library-funded accessibility tooling for reading is some of the most impactful software in the world. Bookshare + OpenDyslexic + OS-level VoiceOver cover a remarkable amount of ground at $0. Pair with Library / Libby, Audiobooks, and Reader Apps.
Print-disabled audiobook services

- NNELS (Canada) — free for Canadian print-disabled.
- CELA / RNIB Library (UK) — free; UK / commonwealth.
- CNIB Library (Canada) — free.
Built-in OS text-to-speech (free)
- ★ Apple VoiceOver / Speak Selection / Spoken Content — free; iOS / iPadOS / macOS; works on any text in any app. Ridiculous quality in 2026 with neural voices.

- Orca — free OSS; Linux screen reader.
TTS reader apps

- Dolphin EasyReader — free; iOS / Android / Win / Mac; DAISY player.
- NV Access NVDA + braille displays — free OSS.
Patterns
- ★ Bookshare first if eligible — the catalogue is staggering and it's free.
- Use OS TTS before paying for a TTS app — Apple's neural voices are excellent.
- Set reader-mode font to OpenDyslexic / Atkinson Hyperlegible if it helps you.
- Audiobooks count as reading — especially for dyslexic / vision-impaired readers; the "real reading" gatekeeping is wrong.
- Library print-disability programmes — many libraries have a print-disability librarian.
