Accessibility, TTS & Dyslexia

Bookshare, OpenDyslexic, VoiceOver, Voice Dream — accessible reading for low vision, blindness, dyslexia.

Free / open-source / library-funded accessibility tooling for reading is some of the most impactful software in the world. Bookshare + OpenDyslexic + OS-level VoiceOver cover a remarkable amount of ground at $0. Pair with Library / Libby, Audiobooks, and Reader Apps.

  • ★ ★ Bookshare (US, Benetech) — free for US users with documented print disability (school / IEP / 504 / doctor's letter); ~1.2M titles in accessible formats (DAISY, EPUB, BRF, MP3).
  • Learning Ally — paid + free for qualifying students; human-narrated for learning differences.
  • NLS BARD (Library of Congress) — free for US blind / print-disabled patrons; the classic "talking books" service.
  • NNELS (Canada) — free for Canadian print-disabled.
  • CELA / RNIB Library (UK) — free; UK / commonwealth.
  • CNIB Library (Canada) — free.

Built-in OS text-to-speech (free)

  • Apple VoiceOver / Speak Selection / Spoken Content — free; iOS / iPadOS / macOS; works on any text in any app. Ridiculous quality in 2026 with neural voices.
  • Edge Read Aloud — free; built into Edge; natural voices; cross-platform.
  • Google TalkBack — free; Android.
  • Windows Narrator — free.
  • NVDA — free OSS; Windows screen reader; the FOSS default for blind users.
  • JAWS — paid; the dominant commercial Windows screen reader.
  • Orca — free OSS; Linux screen reader.

TTS reader apps

  • Voice Dream Reader — paid (~$30 one-time); iOS / Mac; the gold-standard TTS app for dyslexia + reading-fatigue users; supports DAISY / Bookshare / Pocket / web import.
  • Speech Central — paid; iOS / Android / Mac / Win.
  • Voice Aloud Reader — paid + free; Android; reads anything.
  • @Voice Aloud Reader — paid + free; Android.
  • Read Aloud (Chrome extension) — free; on any web page.
  • NaturalReader — paid + free; cross-platform.

Dyslexia-friendly fonts

  • OpenDyslexic — free OSS; weighted-bottom letterforms; available in iOS / Android / Kindle / Kobo / browser extensions.
  • Lexie Readable — free for personal use; another dyslexia-flavoured font.
  • Dyslexie — paid; older proprietary alternative.
  • Atkinson Hyperlegible (Braille Institute) — free; designed for low-vision readers.
  • Bionic Reading mode — see Speed Reading & RSVP; some dyslexic readers benefit.

Visual-impairment / low-vision

  • Built-in OS magnifiers — Mac Zoom, iOS Magnifier, Windows Magnifier, Android Magnifier; all free.
  • eSight / IrisVision / NuEyes — paid hardware vision aids.
  • Be My Eyes — free; volunteer + AI (since 2023) sighted-helper service.
  • Seeing AI (Microsoft) — free; iOS; describes the world; reads handwriting / printed text.

E-reader accessibility

  • Kindle Voice View / TTS via Audible app — paid; Audible-narrated where available.
  • Kobo TTS via Android Boox / Daylight — varies; KOReader has TTS plugins.
  • KOReader TTS plugin — free OSS; piper / espeak backends.
  • Apple Books read-aloud — free; iOS; AI-narrated books since 2024 (controversial).

Captions / transcripts (overlap with Transcription)

  • Whisper (OpenAI) — free OSS; the gold standard for accessible transcripts of audio / podcast / lecture / video. See Transcription.
  • YouTube auto-captions — free.
  • Otter.ai — paid + free.

Refreshable braille / DAISY

  • DAISY format — open accessibility format; supported by Bookshare / Voice Dream / Dolphin EasyReader.
  • Dolphin EasyReader — free; iOS / Android / Win / Mac; DAISY player.
  • NV Access NVDA + braille displays — free OSS.

Patterns

  • Bookshare first if eligible — the catalogue is staggering and it's free.
  • Use OS TTS before paying for a TTS app — Apple's neural voices are excellent.
  • Set reader-mode font to OpenDyslexic / Atkinson Hyperlegible if it helps you.
  • Audiobooks count as reading — especially for dyslexic / vision-impaired readers; the "real reading" gatekeeping is wrong.
  • Library print-disability programmes — many libraries have a print-disability librarian.

Pick this if…
