Audiobook Production & Distribution

ACX, Findaway, Audacity, Reaper, ElevenLabs — record, edit, and distribute audiobooks.

The audiobook market keeps growing — and in 2024-26 it's also the legal-and-ethical battleground over AI-narrated audiobooks. Audible / Authors Republic / Findaway / ACX have all rolled out AI narration with mixed industry response (the SAG-AFTRA AI disputes, narrator union pushback, hybrid pay-per-minute models). For the recording software see audio-editors; for the audio-tagging side see audio-tagging-library; for transcription and dictation workflows see transcription.

Recording / editing

  • Audacity — GPL; free OSS; the indie-author / first-audiobook default. Multi- track recording, noise reduction, normalization, export at ACX-spec. See audio-editors.
  • Reaper — paid; $60 one-time (very generous "discount license"); cross- platform; the indie audiobook narrator's pro tool of choice; lighter than Pro Tools but very capable. See audio-editors.
  • GarageBand — free Mac; perfectly fine for first audiobooks.
  • Adobe Audition — paid subscription; pro-grade; the legacy industry tool.
  • Pro Tools — paid; pro studios; overkill for most authors.
  • Logic Pro — paid; Mac-only; ~$200 one-time; great for music + voice.
  • Hindenburg — paid; ★ specifically podcast / audiobook flavoured; auto-leveling, voice-profile-aware compression.
  • Descript — paid + free; ★ edit-by-text; transcribe, delete words, audio follows; Overdub clones your voice. Game-changer for self-narration with mistakes.

Mastering for ACX / audiobook spec

  • ACX Audio Submission Requirements — 192 kbps+ MP3, -23 to -18 dB RMS, -3 dB peak, less than -60 dB noise floor. Specific to Audible.
  • Auphonic — paid + free quota; web; auto-leveling, noise reduction, ACX compliance check; the indie author's mastering shortcut.
  • Levelator (legacy) — free; old-school auto-leveler; still works; abandoned.
  • iZotope RX — paid; ★ the pro de-noising / mouth-click-removal tool; expensive but transformational.
  • Dialogue Match / Voice Solo — paid plug-ins for narration polishing.

Distribution / aggregators

  • ★ ★ ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange) — free; Amazon's Audible / iTunes audiobook arm; royalty share (free production, share royalties with the narrator) or pay-for-production (you pay narrator upfront, keep all royalties). Exclusive vs non-exclusive trade-off (40% vs 25% royalty).
  • Findaway Voices — free; ★ wide distribution; Apple Books, Google Play, Kobo, Libro.fm, Audiobooks.com, libraries (OverDrive); ~80% royalty after platform share.
  • Authors Republic — paid + free; aggregator; ~70% royalty; broad distribution.
  • Spotify (via Findaway / direct) — Spotify is now an audiobook platform via the Findaway acquisition; eligibility is widening 2024-26.
  • Libro.fm — paid; indie-bookstore-affiliated audiobook platform; popular with authors who care about indie bookshops.
  • Chirp / BookFunnel Audio — paid + free; promo-flavoured audiobook distribution.

Hiring narrators

  • ACX Producer Search — free; built into ACX; the default for finding US / UK voices.
  • Findaway Voices marketplace — free / paid; broader catalog.
  • Voice123 / Voices.com — paid; pro voice-actor marketplaces.
  • Voquent — paid; specializes in non-English audiobook narrators.
  • Reedsy — paid; vetted narrators; see writing-self-publishing-kdp.

AI narration (controversial — flag honestly, 2024-26)

  • ElevenLabs — paid + free quota; ★ the most-used AI voice tool for audiobooks; voice cloning, multilingual, expressive. Free tier is generous; commercial usage requires paid plans.
  • Speechify Studio — paid; consumer + audiobook flavour.
  • WellSaid Labs / Murf — paid; enterprise voice-AI.
  • Descript Overdub — paid; clone your own voice; ★ for podcaster-shape audiobook authors.
  • Audible AI Narration program — Amazon's official program (rolling out 2024-26); uses Audible's voice models; controversial — narrator unions have organized, multiple high-profile narrators have publicly opposed. Authors choosing AI must consider reader reception.
  • Honest take:
    • AI is fine for self-narration assistance (cleanup, breath removal, retake splicing via Descript).
    • AI is legally + ethically contested as the primary narrator. Some platforms require disclosure; some readers downrank AI audiobooks; SAG-AFTRA-tracked union narrators don't accept voice-clone-licensing terms. KDP / ACX disclosure rules apply.
    • For non-fiction the AI tolerance is higher; for fiction human narration is still strongly preferred.

Workflow tools

  • Auphonic — see above.
  • Pozotron — paid; AI-flavoured audiobook proofing (script vs audio match).
  • Reaper templates for audiobooks — community templates that pre-configure ACX spec.

Pick this if…

  • DIY first audiobook, free: Audacity + Auphonic.
  • DIY pro: Reaper + iZotope RX.
  • Hire a narrator, royalty-share: ACX Producer Search.
  • Wide distribution: Findaway Voices + ACX (non-exclusive).
  • AI-assisted self-narration: Descript with Overdub.
  • AI-only narration: ElevenLabs — but disclose, and accept reader / industry pushback.
