DRM-free first
- ★ ★ GOG.com — paid (CD Projekt). The DRM-free first-class store. Every game is a downloadable installer you own; offline-installable; no launcher required (Galaxy is optional). Catalog skews toward older / classic / RPG / strategy + selected new releases. The first place to look for a long-term preservation purchase.
- ★ ★ itch.io — paid + free; indie haven. Pay-what-you-want, bundle deals, jam games, weird experimental projects. Most games are DRM-free (developer's choice). 10% default revenue cut (developer-tunable down to 0%). The default for indie discovery.
- Zoom-Platform — paid; smaller DRM-free store specializing in legacy / rescued titles.
- The DRM-free section of Humble Bundle — paid; some Humble Store / Bundle titles are DRM-free downloads.
- Steam — paid; technically not DRM-free as a platform, but a meaningful number of Steam games ship without Steam DRM (you can copy
steamapps/common/<game>and run it offline). Per-game; community-tracked at PCGamingWiki.
Major paid stores (DRM by default)
- Steam — paid; see PC launchers.
- Epic Games Store — paid; weekly free game; smaller catalog vs Steam; lower revenue cut for devs (12%) which has helped indie launches.
- Microsoft Store / Xbox PC — paid; Game Pass-friendly.
- Humble Store / Humble Bundle — paid; ongoing curated bundles; charity contribution.
- Fanatical / Green Man Gaming / GamesPlanet — paid; legitimate key resellers.
- Ubisoft Store / EA app / Rockstar Launcher / Store — first-party.
Subscription services (Netflix-shape)
- ★ Xbox Game Pass / PC Game Pass — paid (~$11/mo PC, ~$20/mo Ultimate). The largest subscription catalog. First-party Xbox Studios releases drop day-one. Game Pass Ultimate adds xCloud streaming (see Cloud gaming) and EA Play.
- PlayStation Plus — paid; tiered (Essential / Extra / Premium). Premium adds cloud streaming + classics.
- Apple Arcade — paid (~$7/mo); curated mobile + Mac + Apple TV games; no in-app-purchases / ads. Family-friendly, design-curated.
- Netflix Games — included with Netflix subscription; mobile-focused, growing slowly. GTA Trilogy, Hades for select titles in 2024-26.
- Amazon Prime Gaming — included with Prime; monthly free games (mostly via Amazon Games / Epic / GOG keys), Twitch subs, in-game loot.
- Ubisoft+ — paid; Ubisoft titles + Far Cry / Assassin's Creed access.
- EA Play — paid; EA back catalog; included in Game Pass Ultimate.
- GeForce Now — see Cloud gaming.
Indie / curated subscriptions
- Antstream Arcade — paid; cloud retro arcade.
- GOG Connect — free; periodically links Steam libraries to GOG (DRM-free) for selected titles.
Indie discovery that isn't a store
- itch.io browse — free; the best discovery surface for weird / experimental games.
- r/IndieGaming / r/indiegames — free; community.
- Indie game festivals: IGF (Independent Games Festival), GDC awards, A MAZE., DICE.
- Wholesome Games / Wholesome Direct — free; curates cozy indies; periodic broadcast events.
- Day of the Devs — free showcase event.
