Bethesda Modlists & Wabbajack
Wabbajack, Lorerim, Nordic Souls, Living Skyrim, Begin Again — install a 200-mod Bethesda playthrough with one click.
The "I want a complete Skyrim / Fallout overhaul without spending 60 hours on a mod stack" path. For general mod management see Mods & managers. For backup of your modded saves see Cloud saves. For Bethesda-game ROM-shape backup of your modded install (different problem) see general backup ops.
The 2024–26 reality: Wabbajack is the magic. Bethesda modlist authors (Phoenix, Soyuz, sleazy curators of weeks-long playthroughs) publish list files; Wabbajack installs them deterministically against your own legally-purchased game, downloading from the original Nexus Mods URLs. Lists like Lorerim, Nordic Souls, Living Skyrim, Begin Again are now the standard "modded Skyrim experience." It is genuinely one-click after setup.
The installer
- ★ ★ Wabbajack — GPLv3 OSS; Win. Installs curated modlists as MO2 instances against your owned Bethesda games. Handles Nexus Premium login for fast downloads (Premium effectively required for any list above ~50 GB — manual download throttling on free Nexus accounts will take literal days otherwise). Validates hashes; preserves authorship; per-list patches. Run it, point it at the list, walk away.
- Honest flag: Wabbajack does not redistribute mods themselves; it pulls each from its original host. Lists go offline temporarily when major mod updates break the manifest; the community usually patches within days.
Standout 2024–26 modlists (Skyrim Special Edition)
- ★ Lorerim — heavy lore-faithful overhaul; survival-leaning combat. Among the most-installed lists since 2024.
- ★ Nordic Souls — Souls-like gameplay overhaul; shorter list, more accessible install.
- ★ Living Skyrim 4 — long-running, balanced "everything" list; community-maintained.
- Begin Again — quality-of-life + visuals; lighter than the others; gateway list.
- The Phoenix Flavour — visuals-first, vanilla-plus; long-running.
- Wildlander — Requiem-based hardcore RPG.
- Anvil — Souls-leaning combat overhaul.
- Lost Legacy — exploration / lore.
Standout 2024–26 modlists (Fallout 4)
- Magnum Opus — extensive overhaul.
- Rusty Walkers — survival / horror leaning.
- The Midnight Ride — guide-shape, lighter list.
Other Bethesda-game lists
- Fallout New Vegas: Viva New Vegas (guide-shape, not Wabbajack) and Wabbajack lists like Capital Wasteland.
- Skyrim Anniversary / SE: the bulk of the catalog above.
- Starfield: modlist culture is younger; smaller / less battle-tested in 2026 but growing.
Where to find lists
- Wabbajack Gallery — built into the Wabbajack client.
- r/wabbajack, r/skyrimmods — community recommendations and current list health.
- Mod authors' Discord servers — first place to learn about list breaks / fixes.
Considerations
- Storage: 200-300 GB per list is normal for big Skyrim lists. SSD strongly preferred.
- Game version: lists are pinned to specific Skyrim SE / AE / GOG versions. Use Steam's "betas → preview - older version" branch or downgrade tools as the list specifies.
- Anti-cheat / online: irrelevant — Bethesda lists are single-player.
- Save compatibility: switching lists ≠ save-compatible. Each list is its own playthrough.
- Updates: list authors release updates that often invalidate saves. Pin your version mid-playthrough.
Pick this if…
- You want a "complete" Skyrim experience, modded: Lorerim or Living Skyrim 4.
- You want a Souls-like Skyrim: Nordic Souls or Anvil.
- You're new to Bethesda modding: Begin Again, then graduate.
- You want to modify the list: install in MO2 (Wabbajack does this), then enable / disable modules.
- Fallout 4: Magnum Opus or Rusty Walkers.
- You aren't on Windows: Wabbajack runs in Wine on Linux / Steam Deck with some friction; community guides on r/wabbajack.
