Cleaning, Handyman & Service Marketplaces

TaskRabbit, Handy, Thumbtack, Angi, Care.com — find a cleaner, handyman, mover, or one-time helper.

The "I need someone for a one-time task" or "I want a recurring cleaner" marketplaces. For chore tracking inside the household see Chore & Cleaning Task Tracking; for renovation contractor finding (multi-day, licensed pro) see Renovation & DIY Project Management; for babysitting / nanny / tutoring see Babysitter & Tutoring; for moving see Moving & Relocation; for trash / recycling logistics see Trash & Recycling.

General service marketplaces

  • TaskRabbit — paid + free; assemble IKEA, hang a TV, mount shelves, small moves. Background-checked taskers; hourly + add-ons. The default for "I need someone for an afternoon."
  • Thumbtack — paid + free; multi-quote model (post a job, get 3-5 quotes). Cleaning, lawn, handyman, photography, music lessons, tutoring. Wider catalog than TaskRabbit.
  • Angi (formerly Angie's List) — paid + free; the incumbent contractor directory; reviews + matching. Pivoted from membership-only in 2017. Reputation has fluctuated; reviews real but variable.
  • Handy — paid + free; cleaning + handyman, fixed pricing. Was strong; quality has declined per reviews.
  • HomeAdvisor — Angi-owned; redundant with Angi.
  • Yelp — free; reviews, not booking; useful as the cross-check.
  • Nextdoor — free; neighborhood recommendations; underrated for local-handyman finds.
  • Local subreddits — free; the "ask the city" answer.

Cleaning specifically

  • Handy — see above.
  • Cleanly (laundry-flavored, sunset 2023) — flag.
  • Maids.com / The Maids — franchise; book online.
  • MaidsApp / Cleanify — niche regional.
  • Local independents — often cheaper, often better, often only findable via Nextdoor or word-of-mouth.

Handyman / on-call repair

  • TaskRabbit Handyman tier — bigger jobs.
  • Frontdoor — paid; "video-first" handyman triage; useful before scheduling someone.
  • Mr. Handyman, Ace Handyman Services — franchises; book online.

Robot vacuums (the "DIY-cleaning" angle)

  • See Smart Home Hubs and IoT Lighting & LEDs for full coverage; highlights:
  • Roborock S8 Pro Ultra / Q Revo — high-end mop + vacuum.
  • iRobot Roomba — incumbent; the 2024 iRobot subscription saga (paid features behind subscription) has pushed users to Roborock + Dreame.
  • Eufy, Dreame, Shark, Ecovacs — varied tiers.
  • Valetudo — free OSS; strip the cloud out of compatible robovacs (Roborock, Dreame). The geek answer.

License / pricing

  • TaskRabbit, Handy, Thumbtack, Angi, HomeAdvisor: paid (taker fees / lead fees on the pro side); free for consumers.
  • Yelp, Nextdoor: free.
  • Frontdoor: paid (subscription).
  • Valetudo: OSS, free.

Common traps

  • Lead-generation cost. Pros pay $20-60 per lead on Thumbtack / Angi → it's baked into your quote. Direct-to-pro (Nextdoor, word-of-mouth) often gets a better price.
  • Background checks vary. TaskRabbit has them; many marketplaces don't enforce them on the pro side.
  • Insurance. Higher-risk work (electrical, roofing, tree removal) requires licensed + insured. Most marketplaces don't verify.
  • The recurring-cleaner ladder: find via marketplace → switch to direct payment + Venmo / cash → keep them for years.

Pick this if…

  • Default short-task helper: TaskRabbit.
  • Multi-quote on a defined job: Thumbtack.
  • Multi-day / licensed contractor: Angi or Houzz Pro directory (see Renovation & DIY Project Management).
  • Best-quality cleaner: Nextdoor / local recommendations + a one-time TaskRabbit / Thumbtack as fallback.
  • Robot vacuum, no cloud: a Valetudo-compatible Roborock or Dreame.
