The collection of small utilities a practicing musician uses daily — tablature editors, tuners, metronomes, ear-training apps. Most have generous free tiers; the paid ones are mostly subscription. Tablature editors

  • TuxGuitar — GPL Java cross-platform; the OSS Guitar Pro alternative. Reads / writes .gp3 / .gp4 / .gp5, partial .gpx / .gp (Guitar Pro 6/7). Plays MIDI / soundfont. Solid for free tab editing.
  • MuseScore Studio — see audio-notation; ★ excellent tab + standard interleaved; reads .gp files.
  • Guitar Pro 8 (Arobas Music) — paid (~$80 perpetual / cheap upgrade); industry standard for .gp tab files.
  • Sibelius First / Dorico SE — see audio-notation; both can do tab.
  • PowerTab Editor — legacy Win freeware; older .ptb format; superseded by TuxGuitar / MuseScore.
