Plotting & Outlining Tools

Plottr, Aeon Timeline, Campfire, Manuskript — visual plot structure for novelists.

Story-structure tools sit between writing-longform-apps (where you write the prose) and writing-worldbuilding (where you keep the universe bible). They focus on timelines, beat sheets, and arcs. Many writers use Obsidian / Notion templates; specialized tools earn their keep on projects with deep timelines or many viewpoint characters.

Visual plotting / timelines

  • Plottr — paid; ~$25/year or ~$99 lifetime; cross-platform; ★ for visual plot timelines, beat-sheet templates (Save the Cat, Hero's Journey, Snowflake, Story Grid), character arcs. The most-used dedicated plotting tool.
  • Aeon Timeline — paid; ~$60-80 one-time; cross-platform; ★ for historical / fantasy / epic-scale timelines; multi-calendar (custom fantasy years / multi-system); strong Scrivener integration.
  • Campfire — paid + free; web-based; "all-in-one" — plotting, character bible, worldbuilding modules; modular pricing. Polished UX.
  • Story Planner — paid; iOS / Mac; visual outline + scene cards.

All-in-one writing studios (plot + bible + draft)

  • Scrivener — paid; the corkboard + outline + draft tool. See writing-longform-apps.
  • Manuskript — GPL; free OSS; outline + index cards + Scrivener-shape; including a Snowflake-method template. See same.
  • bibisco — GPL; free OSS (paid Supporter Edition); novel-shaped with characters / locations / strands.
  • Novelize — paid subscription; web; clean UI for writers who want a "browser Scrivener."

Notion / Obsidian / markdown templates

  • Obsidian + Templater + Dataview + Longform — free for personal; the power-user's plotting / draft / bible setup. Index-card view, beat sheets as notes, character pages with frontmatter.
  • Notion — paid + free; lots of community novel-tracker templates (Save the Cat, three-act, character sheets); see writing-notion-templates.
  • Capacities / Anytype / AppFlowy — Notion alternatives; see self-hosted notes & wikis.

Story-structure methods (not software)

  • Save the Cat! Beat Sheet — Blake Snyder's screenwriting beat sheet; templated in Plottr / Scrivener / Notion.
  • Snowflake Method — Randy Ingermanson; iterative outlining from a one-line pitch; templated in Manuskript.
  • Hero's Journey / 12-stage — Joseph Campbell / Christopher Vogler; templated everywhere.
  • Three-Act / Four-Act / Seven-Point — classic structures.
  • Story Grid — Shawn Coyne; spreadsheet-flavoured analysis tool.
  • K.M. Weiland's Outlining Your Novel / Structuring Your Novel — books, not software, but referenced everywhere in plotting tools.

Index cards / scene-level tools

  • Scrivener corkboard — paid; included.
  • Manuskript index-card view — free; included.
  • Trello / Notion Kanban — paid + free; some writers use Kanban for scene status.
