Sangha & Community Apps

Plum Village Online Sangha, Insight Timer Groups, r/streamentry — community without geographic constraint.

The single biggest predictor of sustained contemplative practice is community / sangha. Apps and online communities don't replace local in-person sangha but they extend it — especially if you live somewhere without a local sitting group, mosque, shul, monastery, or chapel of your tradition.

Sister sections: Buddhist Traditions & Apps, Buddhist Canon, Christian Apps, Jewish Apps & Sefaria, Islamic Apps, Hindu, Vedic & Yoga, Stoicism, Secular Contemplative, Retreats, Meditation Apps, Recovery & 12-Step.

  • Renovaré / The Liturgists / Stoa Conversa / Spirituality & Practice / Tergar / Bhumisparsha — paid (~$50-200/yr typical).
  • OBOD / The Troth membership — paid (~$50-100/yr).

Practical guidance

  • Local first when possible. A weekly in-person sit / service / minyan / jumu'ah / mass beats any online sangha.
  • Online sangha matters most for: rural / small-town practitioners, traditions without local presence, people with disabilities, schedule constraints, isolation.
  • Pick one community and show up consistently. Lurking ten Discords beats joining and ghosting one.
  • Watch for parasocial dynamics. Online communities can produce intense one-way relationships with teachers / leaders.
  • Watch for cult-shape dynamics. Tight communities + a charismatic leader + cosmic stakes is the cult ingredient list.

Honest limits

  • Online community is thinner than in-person. Embodied presence, shared meals, ritual co-presence — apps don't replicate these.
  • Reddit dynamics: visibility-rewarding controversy, anonymity costs, mod variability.
  • Discord servers churn. Today's vibrant community is next year's dead Discord.
  • The "online sangha" is not equivalent to taking refuge with a sangha in tradition; in Buddhism specifically, refuge in sangha has formal meaning.
