Mindfulness apps converged in 2018-22 — the differentiation now is price model + content style: structured curriculum (Headspace), sleep / soundscape (Calm), free + huge library (Insight Timer), or FOSS / no-cloud. Most of these have free tiers worth using before any sub.

  • Calm — paid (~$15/mo / $70/yr) + free intro tier; sleep stories (Matthew McConaughey, etc.); soundscapes; Tamara Levitt for daily sessions. Slightly more "lifestyle" than Headspace.
  • Insight Timercompletely free with paid Member-Plus tier (~$60/yr); largest library on earth (200,000+ tracks); meditation timer; courses / community.
  • Waking Up — paid (~$130/yr); Sam Harris's curriculum; philosophy + meditation; financial-hardship free option (you can email to ask).
  • Ten Percent Happier — paid; Dan Harris's app; teacher-driven (Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg).

Practical guidance

  • Free trials before you commit. Headspace + Calm + Insight Timer all have generous free intros. Try a week of each.
  • Insight Timer's free tier alone covers 90% of what most people need.
  • The app doesn't matter as much as the daily 10 minutes. Don't optimize the tool over the practice.
  • If you have cardiac concerns (panic-disorder triggered HR spikes), HRV-paired apps can be over-stimulating; start unguided.

Cost / license honesty

  • Headspace / Calm / Waking Up / Ten Percent — ~$70-130/yr; sometimes free via employer EAP / Aetna / Kaiser benefits.
  • Insight Timer — free, optional ~$60/yr Member-Plus.
  • Smiling Mind / Healthy Minds / UCLA Mindful — completely free.
