Hotel & Accommodation Search

Hotel meta-search, OTAs, vacation rentals, hostels, and aparthotels — who has the inventory, who pays the cancellation, and where points actually book.

For flights, see Flight Search & Aggregators and Award Flight Search. For booking hotels with points, the award-search blogs there overlap heavily. Plot stays on a map with Maps & Geo once you have candidates; sync confirmations into Calendars & Scheduling.

OTAs (online travel agencies) take a 10–25% commission and complicate refunds, schedule changes, and elite-status crediting. Always cross-check the chain's own site — most chains now price-match OTAs and you keep your status nights.

Hotel meta-search & OTAs

  • Booking.com — free; ★ widest inventory worldwide, especially independent hotels; Genius loyalty (free) gives 10–20% off after a few stays. Free cancellation is the default — read each property carefully.
  • Hotels.com — paid + free; the "stay 10 get 1 free" Rewards program ended in 2023, replaced by an Expedia-wide One Key system that's less generous.
  • Agoda — paid + free; ★ for Asia coverage; aggressive discount stacking but support is uneven outside their core region.
  • Trivago — free; pure meta-search, no booking — sends you to whichever OTA has the best price.
  • Kayak Hotels, Google Hotels, Skyscanner Hotels — free meta-search; useful sanity checks.
  • HotelTonight — paid + free; ★ for last-minute (next 7 days), originally same-day-only.
  • Priceline — paid + free; "Express Deals" / "Pricebreakers" hide the hotel name until you book — cheaper but no refunds and no points.
  • Hotwire — same blind-booking model.
  • Trip.com — free; aggressive on Asian inventory.

Direct-to-chain (best for points / status)

  • Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, Hyatt (smallest, best loyalty), IHG One Rewards, Accor Live Limitless, Wyndham, Choice, Best Western — free to join. Booking direct earns points, status nights, and unlocks elite recognition that OTAs strip.
  • Hyatt's award chart (still mostly fixed in 2026) is the last great loyalty deal; Hilton and Marriott use dynamic pricing.

Vacation rentals

  • Airbnb — paid + free; the incumbent. Quality varies wildly post-2022; cleaning fees and host-set rules are now most of the friction.
  • Vrbo (Expedia Group) — entire-home only, family-flavored, weaker in cities.
  • FurnishedFinder — paid hosts + free for renters; ★ for monthly furnished — built for traveling nurses but used by digital nomads. No service fees on the renter side.
  • Plum Guide — paid; curated luxury; small inventory.
  • Sabbatical Homes, HomeExchange, Kindred — sabbatical / swap-flavored.
  • Sonder, Mint House, Domio — paid; aparthotel-style ("Airbnb with a front desk"); good for 1–4 week stays.
  • Selina — coliving / hostel hybrid; declining post-2024 financial trouble — verify before booking.

Hostels

  • Hostelworld — free; the dominant inventory. Filter by ratings carefully — anything below 8.0 is a coin flip.
  • Booking.com — also lists hostels (sometimes cheaper than Hostelworld due to lower commission).
  • HostelBookers — merged into Hostelworld.

Boutique / specialty

  • Mr & Mrs Smith — paid; boutique-curated; a Marriott partner since 2024 (you can earn / redeem Bonvoy points).
  • Tablet Hotels — Michelin-owned; design hotels.
  • Kayak Premium, Booking Genius, Hotels.com VIP — loyalty-tier discounts on each platform.

Practical rules (2026)

  • Always check the chain's own site before booking via OTA — for points / status / refunds.
  • Free cancellation on Booking.com is your default flex; lock in a refundable rate even if a non-refundable rate is $20 cheaper.
  • Genius / Hilton Diamond / Hyatt Globalist / Marriott Platinum unlock breakfast and free upgrades — these compound into real money on a long trip.
  • Cleaning fees on Airbnb often make 3-night stays worse than a hotel; compare all-in.
  • Resort fees are still mostly hidden until checkout in the US; meta-search results that don't include them are misleading.

Pick this if…

  • Default first search, widest inventory: Booking.com.
  • Asia, especially: Agoda or 12Go for transport-stays bundle.
  • Monthly stays, digital nomad: FurnishedFinder.
  • Last-minute "find a bed tonight": HotelTonight or Booking.com.
  • Earning chain points / status: book direct on the chain's site.
  • Hostels: Hostelworld with 8.5+ filter.
  • Award stays: see Award Flight Search & Loyalty Tools.
