Model Libraries & STL Hosts

The "where do I get the STL?" question. Public hosts split between FOSS-leaning free sites (Printables, MakerWorld) and older sites with mixed quality (Thingiverse, Cults3D); self-hosted managers (Manyfold, Fishtank) let you treat your downloaded library like a media collection.

Public model hosts (free)

• ★ Printables (Prusa Research) — free; CC-licensed by default; growing fastest in 2024–2026 thanks to Prusameters print-rewards. The default new-upload host for FOSS-leaning designers.
• ★ MakerWorld (Bambu Lab) — free; deep integration with Bambu Studio (one-click slice/print). Bambu-skewed but accepts any printer. Print Profiles + parametric Maker Lab makes it second-to-none for one-click printing.
• Thingiverse (UltiMaker) — free; the original; vast catalog but increasingly stale and ad-heavy. Still has irreplaceable older models.
• Thangs (Physna) — free; aggregates Thingiverse + Printables + others, plus geometric search. Closed-source but useful as a meta-search.
• Cults3D — mixed free + paid models; strong for designer-driven & boutique paid STLs.
• MyMiniFactory — mixed free + paid; miniatures-focused; paid Tribes (Patreon-style) for sculptors.
• Pinshape, YouMagine, GrabCAD Community — older; mostly mechanical; lower traffic now.
• Instructables — project-shaped, often with STL bundles; free.

Miniatures / tabletop-specific

• ★ Patreon (sculptor-by-sculptor) — the dominant model for paid miniatures.
• Tribes (MyMiniFactory) — Patreon-style on MMF.
• Loot Studios, Artisan Guild, Titan Forge, Archvillain Games — popular sculptor brands; paid monthly bundles.
• Hero Forge — closed-source character builder; paid STL exports.
• Eldritch Foundry, Anvl, Desktop Hero — character/mini builders; paid.

Marketplace / commercial

• CGTrader, TurboSquid, Sketchfab Store, Renderhub — primarily render assets; check printability before buying.
• Fab (Epic) — successor to Unreal Marketplace; mixed; not 3D-print specific.
• Etsy — surprisingly common storefront for paid STLs and "Patterns" (digital downloads).

Self-hosted model managers

• ★ Manyfold — open source (AGPL); self-hosted "Plex for STLs". Tags, library scans, multi-user, deduplication, prints + image previews. The 2026 default for serious hoarders.
• Fishtank — open source; younger Manyfold alternative; aimed at miniature collectors with paint-tracking and base-management features.
• Spool (spool-app) — open source; smaller community; lightweight library browser.
• 3D Library (older) / STLMaster — early entries; check maintenance before adopting.
• Files-based + Eagle / Pixory / a NAS folder — many people just keep everything in tagged folders; works fine until it doesn't.

Browsers / search across libraries

• Thangs — geometric search across multiple sites.
• 3DSearched / 3DFindIt — federated search; coverage varies.
• Search the slicer's "send-to-printer" integrations — Printables → PrusaSlicer/OrcaSlicer, MakerWorld → Bambu Studio/OrcaSlicer.

• ★ Printables Direct Send — PrusaSlicer / OrcaSlicer; one-click open-in-slicer from printables.com.
• ★ MakerWorld → Bambu Studio / OrcaSlicer — one-click open print profile.
• Thingiverse "Open in PrusaSlicer" browser extensions — community add-ons.

License / sharing concerns

• CC-BY / CC-BY-SA / CC-NC — most Printables uploads. Read before reselling prints.
• Designer EULAs (Patreon, MMF Tribes) — usually allow personal printing, sometimes allow merchant printing for a fee, sometimes forbid.
• OpenSCAD / CadQuery sources — many designers publish source on GitHub under MIT/MPL alongside STLs; if you want to remix, prefer those.
