AI Summarization & Q&A

NotebookLM, Claude, ChatGPT, Glasp AI — summarise books, articles, and YouTube transcripts.

The 2024-26 reading-tooling shift: AI summaries are good enough. The hosted services are fast and convenient (and take your data); the local / self-host stack — Open WebUI + Ollama, AnythingLLM, Khoj — is now competitive for everyday summarisation and is private + free. Pair with AI PDF Q&A (NotebookLM), AI / LLM, and Self-Host AI / LLM.

Self-host & FOSS first (private, free)

  • ★ ★ Open WebUI + Ollama — free OSS; local summary on Llama / Qwen / Mistral; private; the default DIY pick. See Self-Host AI / LLM.
  • ★ ★ Khoj — free OSS; local Obsidian / Markdown / PDF Q&A across your whole vault. The most polished personal-knowledge LLM in 2026.
  • AnythingLLM — free OSS; document summary + RAG; multi-tenant.
  • LM Studio — free; desktop chat with PDF; closed-source binary but local-only.
  • Whisper + local LLM — DIY: transcribe with Whisper → summarise locally. Private and free if you have a GPU (or even CPU for small models).
  • PrivateGPT — free OSS; older but works.

Hosted (paid + free, SaaS — secondary)

  • ★ ★ NotebookLM (Google) — free; multi-source summary + Audio Overview + Mind Maps. See AI PDF Q&A.
  • Claude (Anthropic) — paid + free; Projects + 200K context; long-doc summary king; best citations / hallucination floor in 2026.
  • ChatGPT — paid + free; file upload + GPTs; widest tool access.
  • Gemini — free + paid; integrates with Drive + YouTube.

Per-format summarisers

  • Glasp — free; YouTube transcript + web-page summaries; social highlights.
  • Eightify — paid + free; YouTube summariser.
  • Recall.ai — paid + free; summarise podcasts / videos / web.
  • TLDR This — paid + free; web-article summariser.
  • Smmry — free; old-school extractive summary.
  • Summari — paid + free; chrome extension.

Reader-side AI

  • Readwise Reader Ghostreader — paid; summary + Q&A on every saved article.
  • Matter AI — paid; same niche.
  • Pocket "highlights" + AI summary — paid; nascent in 2026.
  • Kindle's AI summary — Amazon's been piloting AI book summaries; controversial; flag.

Local / private (deeper)

See the Self-host & FOSS first section at the top of this page — Open WebUI, Khoj, AnythingLLM, LM Studio, and the Whisper + local-LLM pipeline.

Podcast / audio summarisers

  • Snipd — free + paid; podcast app with AI chapter summaries + highlight clips; exports to Readwise. Genuinely changes podcast listening.
  • Recall — paid + free; same.
  • Whisper + Claude — DIY: transcribe with Whisper → summarise with Claude. Private and free if you have the GPU.

Patterns

  • Use AI for skim, humans for depth. AI summaries are good for "should I read this?", not for replacing reading.
  • Always check citations. NotebookLM and Claude both attach source spans; trust them more than unsourced summaries.
  • Ghostreader your read-later queue. If you've saved 200 articles, summary-triage 90% to delete and read 10% deeply.
  • Local for confidential — health / legal / contracts → Open WebUI + local model.

Pick this if…

  • Local / private / free default: Open WebUI + Ollama (or Khoj for Obsidian users).
  • Default free multi-source hosted summary: NotebookLM.
  • Best long-doc reasoning (paid hosted): Claude.
  • Inside your read-later app (paid): Readwise Reader Ghostreader.
  • YouTube summary: Glasp or Eightify.
  • Podcast summary: Snipd.
