PCB Holding & Bench Tools

PCBite, Sensepeek, vises, stencil printers, ultrasonic cleaners, flux removers, and the mechanical-bench accessories that keep boards still.

The unsung tier of bench tools — fixturing, cleaning, stencil work. None of these are "instruments" but every measurement and rework session falls apart without them. Pair with Soldering Stations, Hot Air Rework, Microscopes, and Reflow Hotplates / Ovens. For the boards themselves see PCB / EDA Suites; for fixturing-as-test see Test Fixtures.

Probes / flexible test fixturing

  • PCBite (Sensepeek) — magnetic-base flexible probes that hold themselves on a board to make N stable contact points. The PCBite Kit (4 probes + base + mat) is ~$300 and is widely considered the single best bench-fixturing upgrade you can buy. Pairs with their oscilloscope probes, hotplates, and clips.
  • PCBite Pro — Sensepeek's higher-end version; more probes, larger mat, modular accessories.
  • Tekbox / generic SMD-clip kits — KZL / Pomona test clips; cheap alternatives for grabbing pins.
  • Hirschmann / E-Z-Hook test clips — premium minigrabbers for scope and DMM leads.

PCB vises and "third hands"

  • Stickvise — open-source, simple PCB vise, $40. Fine for 90% of bench holds.
  • Panavise 350 / 366 — the classic adjustable American PCB vise; pricier, immortal.
  • JBC PCB holders — JBC's bench fixtures; pro-grade, expensive.
  • PCB Workmate / Knipex — adjustable workmates from the EE bench world.
  • SE / Generic "third hand" with crocodile clips and magnifier — the $20 entry tier; OK if you don't have a microscope.
  • Goldfinger holders — Tindie-tier custom magnetic PCB holders.

Stencil printers / paste deposition

  • Lehua manual stencil printer — sub-$200 manual stencil printer that everyone-who-builds-prototypes-twice ends up owning. Repeatable for 5–50-board runs.
  • PrintMate STM Universal — slightly better Chinese manual printer.
  • DIY stencil holders — many laser-cut / 3D-printed designs on Hackaday for one-off runs.
  • Solder paste: leaded SAC305 / Sn63Pb37 — Chip Quik / AIM / MG Chemicals are the hobby-tier pastes; refrigerate, use within shelf life.
  • Squeegees (metal preferred over plastic for fine pitch) — included with most printers but get spares.

PCB cleaning

  • Ultrasonic cleaners (Branson, JPL, generic Chinese) — 60 W tabletop ultrasonic baths for IPA-cleaning whole assemblies. ~$80 entry tier; Branson 1800 / 3800 are pro picks.
  • IPA dispensers (squeeze bottles, brushes) — bench staple. 99% IPA only; 70% leaves residue.
  • Flux remover sprays — Techspray Flux-Off, MG Chemicals 4140, Chemtronics ES1631; for spot cleaning where you can't bath the board.
  • Brushes — anti-static stiff bristle brushes for residue scrub.
  • Compressed air / dust-off — the cheap last step.

Tweezers and precision handling

  • Vetus / Engineer SMD tweezers — the Aliexpress / Japanese hobby standard. Vetus ESD-15, ESD-11, ESD-12 are the standard set. ~$15 each.
  • Excelta tweezers — premium American precision tweezers.
  • Dumont tweezers — Swiss-made; precision lab tweezers, expensive.
  • JBC nano-tweezers / heated tweezers — for SMD removal; pair with a JBC station.
  • Vacuum pickup pens (Vetus 939V / generic) — sub-$30 vacuum pencils for placing 0402s and BGAs without launching them.

Wire / cable bench tools

  • Knipex stripping pliers — the EU bench standard for wire stripping.
  • IDC ribbon cable assembly tools — for ribbon-pinning to headers.
  • Crimpers (Engineer PA-09 / PA-21 for Dupont; Iwiss for ferrules and JST) — match the crimper to the connector family or you'll have bad days.

License / pricing notes

  • Stickvise is open-hardware (CC-BY-SA); you can build one or buy assembled.
  • PCBite / Sensepeek is closed product but their probe ecosystem is genuinely worth the premium.
  • Most bench accessories don't have firmware to license — they're just metal and plastic. Buy quality once.
  • Branson ultrasonics are calibratable and rebuildable; cheap Chinese USCs aren't but cost a quarter as much.

Pick this if…

  • First serious fixturing upgrade: PCBite Kit. Wildly worth it.
  • Cheap PCB vise: Stickvise.
  • Pro PCB vise: Panavise 350 or JBC holder.
  • Stencil-print 10-board runs: Lehua manual printer.
  • Whole-assembly cleaning: any 1.3 L ultrasonic + 99% IPA.
  • Bench tweezer set: Vetus ESD-11 + ESD-15 + ESD-12.
  • You drop 0402s constantly: vacuum pickup pen + good tweezers + a magnetic mat.
