Habit Tracking

Habitica, Loop Habit Tracker, Streaks — the FOSS, free, and gamified options.

Habit-tracking apps live or die on friction-free daily check-in and a sane history view. The market splits into gamified (Habitica, Streaks), clean & FOSS (Loop Habit Tracker), commitment-based (Beeminder), and all-in-one productivity habits (TickTick, Notion).

Sister sections: Self-Hosted Personal Apps, Mental Health Journaling, Meditation Apps, Strength Logging, Notes & Wiki, AI / LLM Self-Host.

FOSS / self-host

  • ★ ★ Loop Habit Tracker — FOSS Android; clean UI; good widget; CSV export; backups via Syncthing or Google Drive. The Android-first FOSS default.
  • ★ ★ Habitica — FOSS RPG-style habit tracker; self-hostable (Node + MongoDB) or use the free hosted instance; party / quest mechanics; iOS + Android. Uniquely good for socially-motivated people.
  • Tasks.org — FOSS Android; tasks + due dates + recurring; can be coerced into habits.
  • Habits (F-Droid) — minimalist; under-maintained.

Hosted (paid + free)

  • Streaks — paid (~$5 one-time iOS, ~$2/mo Android — separate apps); a polished iOS classic; up to 12 habits; Apple Health integration.
  • HabitNow — paid (~$25 one-time) + free tier; Android + iOS; nice graphs.
  • Way of Life — paid (~$5) + free tier; iOS-first.
  • Habit Tracker (Simple Habit Tracker) — paid + free; Android.
  • Productive — paid (~$10/yr) + free tier.
  • Strides — paid + free; great for goals + habits combined.

Productivity-suite habits

  • TickTick — paid (~$28/yr) + free tier; tasks + habits + Pomodoro + calendar; the most "all-in-one" pick. Habits are bundled.
  • Todoist — paid + free; recurring tasks can act as habits.
  • Notion + Habit Template — free / Plus plan; manual but customizable.
  • Obsidian + Tracker plugin — free; for note-takers; see Notes & Wiki.

Commitment / accountability

  • Beeminder — paid + free; financial commitment device (you fail a habit → they charge your card); pairs with many trackers (Strava, Fitbit, GitHub commits, Strong workouts, RescueTime). The "I will literally pay if I don't run today" pick.
  • StickK — paid + free; commitment contracts.
  • Forfeit — paid + free; charity-pledge accountability.

Specialty

  • Daylio — paid + free; mood + habit hybrid; see Mental Health Journaling.
  • Bearable — paid + free; symptom + habit + medication tracker; see Chronic Disease Management.
  • Macro Factor — paid; nutrition habits; see future cooking-nutrition section.
  • Finch — paid + free; cute pet-sim habit tracker (gen-Z favorite).

Tools the QS crowd actually use

  • Apple Health auto-tracking — many habits (steps, workouts, sleep, mindful minutes) are tracked passively. See Apple Watch.
  • Health Connect — Android equivalent. See Wearable Aggregation.
  • Spreadsheet (Excel / Sheets) — the eternal default; surprisingly resilient.

Don't fall into

  • Habit-tracker hopping — the meta-habit of switching apps every month is the anti-habit. Pick one and stick.
  • Tracking too many — 3-5 habits max. The 30-habit dashboard is a procrastination tactic.
  • Mistaking the dashboard for the doing — Loop / Streaks looks great, doesn't make you do the thing.

Cost / license honesty

  • Loop Habit Tracker — GPL-3.0 FOSS; free.
  • Habitica — GPL-3.0 FOSS; hosted free or self-host; in-app purchases for cosmetics.
  • Streaks — $5 one-time iOS.
  • HabitNow / TickTick / Way of Life — $5-30/yr.
  • Beeminder — free for 3 goals, paid for more (~$50/yr).

Pick this if…

  • Android, FOSS, no cloud account: Loop Habit Tracker.
  • Gamified / social motivation: Habitica.
  • Polished iOS, simple: Streaks.
  • Already use TickTick / Todoist: their habit module.
  • Need accountability with money on the line: Beeminder.
  • Mood + habit: Daylio (see Mental Health Journaling).
