Smart Locks & Cameras (Household)
August, Yale, Schlage, Aqara, Reolink, Ring, Wyze — locks with Apple Home Key and cameras that don't need a monthly subscription.
The household side of smart-home security: the front door and the cameras watching it. For the broader smart-home stack see Smart Home Hubs (Home Assistant); for camera AI / NVR specifically see Smart Home Cameras & NVR and Smart Home Camera AI; for garage / doorbell / sprinkler see Garage, Doorbell & Sprinkler; for presence-aware automations (mmWave) see Presence & mmWave.
Smart locks (2026 generation, Apple Home Key)
The 2024-26 differentiator: Apple Home Key support — tap your iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock, no app launch, NFC. Android equivalents (Google Home / Matter Lock) are catching up.
- ★ Schlage Encode Plus — paid hardware (~$300); Apple Home Key + Wi-Fi, no hub required. The 2026 default for Apple-house homeowners.
- ★ Aqara U100 — paid hardware (~$190); Apple Home Key, fingerprint, Bluetooth, optional Aqara hub for Matter. Good price-to-features.
- ★ Yale Assure 2 Plus — paid hardware; Apple Home Key + Matter over Thread. Yale-owned (parent company also owns August). Matter over Thread is the future-proof bet.
- August Smart Lock (Yale-owned) — paid hardware; deadbolt-retrofit; doesn't replace the deadbolt, attaches inside. Good if your existing deadbolt is good.
- Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro / Latch — paid; fingerprint + keypad + Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Strong fingerprint reader.
- Wyze Lock Bolt / Lock Plus — paid; cheap (~$80); fingerprint; closed cloud.
- Lockly Visage — paid; facial recognition as a unlock method. Niche; impressive demo, mixed reviews on rejection rates.
- Level Bolt / Lock+ — paid; invisible (the entire lock is inside your existing deadbolt); Apple Home Key on Lock+. Premium.
Smart locks — what to ignore
- Cloud-only locks with no local fallback — when the company sunsets, the lock bricks (e.g., Otto, Friday).
- Locks that require a proprietary bridge with no Matter / HomeKit / Z-Wave fallback.
- Locks without a physical key fallback — get one with a key cylinder for the day the battery dies.
Consumer cameras (the "Ring-or-not" decision)
- ★ ★ Reolink — paid hardware ($40-200/cam); the self-host-friendly default in 2026. RTSP + ONVIF; works with Frigate and Home Assistant; no monthly subscription required for local recording. PoE and Wi-Fi options. Battery models too.
- Models worth knowing: RLC-823A (PTZ PoE), RLC-1212A (12 MP turret), Argus 4 Pro (battery + solar).
- ★ Wyze Cam — paid hardware ($25-50); cheap; closed cloud + paid Cam Plus for advanced detection; some local recording on SD. Good for a starter setup; not ideal for power users post the 2022 security breach.
- Ring (Amazon) — paid hardware + paid Ring Protect ($4-20/mo) for any cloud recording. The default many people regret. Subscription-locked + Amazon-owned + privacy-controversial.
- Nest Cam (Google) — paid hardware + Nest Aware subscription. Tight Google integration; closed.
- Eufy SoloCam / EufyCam — paid hardware; was the "no subscription needed" pick until the 2022 cloud-leak controversy. Local-storage models still good if you trust the firmware.
- Arlo — paid hardware + mandatory subscription for most features. Skip for new builds.
- TP-Link Tapo — paid hardware; cheap; ONVIF / RTSP on most models; Frigate-compatible.
- Aqara G3 / G5 — paid hardware; HomeKit Secure Video native; small AI features on-device.
Doorbells
- ★ Reolink Video Doorbell — paid hardware; PoE or Wi-Fi; RTSP local; no subscription for local recording. The Frigate-compatible default in 2026.
- Aqara G4 — paid hardware; HomeKit Secure Video; battery; small.
- Eufy Video Doorbell — paid hardware; local-storage focused.
- Ring Video Doorbell — paid hardware + Ring Protect; the default many households inherit from a previous owner.
- Nest Hello / Nest Doorbell — paid hardware + Nest Aware.
Camera NVR / AI layer
If you have multiple cameras you want a recorder, not just per-camera apps. See Smart Home Cameras & NVR and Smart Home Camera AI. The 2026 default: Frigate + Coral / GPU + a fleet of Reolink PoE cams. Local AI ("person at the door") without a Ring subscription.
License / pricing notes
- Schlage Encode Plus, Yale Assure 2, Aqara U100: paid hardware; no required subscription for core unlock.
- Wyze Lock: paid hardware; cloud-dependent for remote.
- Reolink, TP-Link Tapo: paid hardware; no monthly required with local NVR / Frigate / Home Assistant.
- Ring, Nest, Arlo: paid hardware + paid monthly subscription for cloud features.
- Wyze, Eufy: cheap paid hardware; subscription pushes for advanced features.
The 2026 honest verdict
- Apple-house with HomeKit: Schlage Encode Plus + Aqara G4 doorbell + Reolink HomeKit cams.
- Home Assistant + Frigate setup: Reolink PoE cameras everywhere; Schlage Encode Plus or Yale Assure 2 lock; Aqara G4 doorbell.
- Avoid lock-in: anything with Matter over Thread is your future-proof bet (Yale Assure 2 Plus, Aqara U100 with hub).
- If you already own Ring: keep it; the cancel-and-replace is rarely worth it; just know what subscription you're paying.
Pick this if…
- Default lock, Apple-house: Schlage Encode Plus.
- Default lock, Matter over Thread, future-proof: Yale Assure 2 Plus.
- Lock with great fingerprint: Ultraloq.
- Default cameras, self-host friendly: Reolink + Frigate + Home Assistant.
- Already in HomeKit Secure Video: Aqara G3/G4/G5 or Logitech Circle View.
- Already on Ring: stay; just don't add more.
- Cheapest "good enough": Wyze (with eyes-open about closed cloud).
