DJ Software

Mixxx, Traktor, Rekordbox, Serato, VirtualDJ — performance / mixing software.

DJ software is its own category — beat-grids, two-deck mixing, hot cues, key analysis, controller mapping — distinct from DAWs (see daws-overview) and plugin hosts (see audio-plugin-hosts). For audio routing into DJ apps see audio-routing-win-mac and audio-routing-linux-pipewire. For tagging / library prep see audio-tagging-library.

Free / OSS

  • Mixxx — GPL2, cross-platform. The reference free DJ app. 4 decks, beat-grid analysis, key detection, MIDI controller mapping for hundreds of devices, broadcast / streaming output, BPM sync, time-stretching, vinyl control. Genuinely competitive with paid software for most use cases. The default in 2026 for free DJing.
  • Rekordbox (Pioneer / AlphaTheta) — freemium → paid (~$15/mo Core / $30/mo Creative). Native to Pioneer CDJ / DJM hardware; the club / festival default. Free tier limited to 2-deck non-controller use unless you have hardware.
  • Serato DJ Pro — paid (~$10/mo or $300 one-time). Strong on hip-hop / scratch / turntable workflows; controller-lock licensing model (free with select hardware).
  • Traktor Pro 4 (Native Instruments) — paid (~$100); long-running staple; great Stem Deck (real-time stem isolation) workflow.
  • Virtual DJ (Atomix) — freemium home / paid pro; long-running mainstream DJ app.
  • djay Pro AI (Algoriddim) — paid Mac / iOS / iPad; Apple Music + Tidal integration; Neural Mix stem isolation.
  • Cross DJ (Mixvibes) — paid.

Hybrid DAW-DJ / live performance

  • Ableton Live — see daws-paid-flagship; the de-facto live-performance DAW. Many electronic acts perform full sets in Live's Session view.
  • Bitwig Studio — see daws-paid-flagship; modern DAW with great live-clip workflow.
  • Tracktion Waveform Pro — paid; live-performance leaning.
  • VCV Rack 2 — see synths-free-oss; modular live patching.

Hardware controllers (refs)

  • Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 / FLX6 / FLX10 — entry → mid; works with Rekordbox + Serato.
  • Native Instruments Traktor S2 / S3 / S4 mk3 — Traktor controllers.
  • Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX — entry budget.
  • Pioneer CDJ-3000 / DJM-A9 — club standard.
  • Denon Prime 4+ / SC6000 — standalone CDJ alternative.
  • Hercules / Reloop / Rane Twelve — community-favored controllers.

Streaming / broadcast considerations

  • DJ sets to Twitch / YouTube need rights handling — see realtime-video and DJ Monitor / Pex / SoundExchange licensing if you go pro.
  • Mixcloud Live — free; the most DJ-friendly streaming destination (handles DMCA gracefully).
  • Twitch Soundtrack — free pre-cleared library.
  • Beatport Streaming — paid streaming for mixers.

Stem-isolation in DJ apps (2024-26 trend)

DJ apps have integrated AI stem isolation in real-time — the same tech as vocal-stem-separation but live:

  • Traktor Stems — Native Instruments' Stem Deck.
  • djay Pro AI Neural Mix — Algoriddim.
  • Rekordbox Stems — added in v6.7 (2023+).
  • Serato Stems — added 2022+.

Track prep / library tools

  • Mixed in Key (paid) — analyses key + energy; standard "harmonic mixing" tool.
  • rekordbox / Serato library analysis — built-in.
  • Mixxx auto-analysis — built-in.
  • Beats / Beat Grids are tool-specific and don't always cross between apps.

Vinyl control / DVS

  • Serato DVS — paid; vinyl control.
  • Traktor Scratch — paid.
  • Mixxx Vinyl Control — free; supports Serato Control Vinyl + Traktor MK1/MK2 timecode.

Pick this if…

  • Hip-hop / scratch / turntables: Serato DJ Pro.
  • Live electronic performance / production-into-DJ: Ableton Live or Bitwig.
  • Mac / iOS DJ: djay Pro AI.
  • Real-time stem isolation: any major paid DJ app (or Traktor's Stem Decks specifically).
  • Stream a DJ set without DMCA pain: Mixcloud Live.
