Self-Hosted Bookmarks, RSS & Read-Later

Linkding, Karakeep, FreshRSS, Miniflux, Wallabag — own your reading.

Bookmark managers

Read-later (Pocket / Instapaper alternatives)

  • Wallabag — the long-running default; mobile apps; reader mode; tags.
  • Karakeep — also covers read-later (above).
  • Omnivore — was a great alternative; sunset and open-sourced; some forks active.
  • Reader by Readwise — closed source but excellent.
  • Postiz reader — newer.

RSS readers

Newsletter handling

  • Stalwart Mail + FreshRSS — capture newsletters as RSS by piping inboxes through Stalwart's filters.
  • Kill-the-Newsletter — turn email newsletters into RSS feeds.
  • Feedrabbit / Newsletter Glue — alternatives.

Discovery / aggregators

  • commafeed-aggregator, NewsBoat (terminal), NetNewsWire (desktop) — clients pointing at any of the above.
  • Inoreader / Feedly — closed source hosted; widely used.

Browser extensions / mobile clients

  • Linkding has official extensions for all major browsers.
  • Karakeep has extensions + iOS / Android apps.
  • Wallabag has iOS / Android apps + share extensions.
  • FreshRSS via Reeder / NetNewsWire / Fluent Reader — pick a client you love; pointed at your server via Fever / Google Reader API.

Patterns to adopt

  • One tool for bookmarks, one for read-later. Don't make one tool do both unless it's Karakeep (which is built for it).
  • Browser extension is the killer feature; pick a tool with one.
  • Backup the DB — your saved articles are valuable.
  • OPML import / export — accept that you'll switch tools eventually.
  • Pair with a static-site like 11ty / Hugo to publish a public "interesting links" page.

Pick this if…

  • Default bookmarks: Linkding.
  • Bookmarks + read-later + AI features: Karakeep.
  • Default RSS reader, feature-rich: FreshRSS.
  • Default RSS reader, minimal: Miniflux.
  • Read-later only: Wallabag.
  • Old-school static / federated: Shaarli.
  • Newsletter → RSS: Kill-the-Newsletter.
