Live Streaming Software

OBS Studio, Streamlabs, vMix, Wirecast, Twitch Studio, Restream Studio — the encoder/switcher apps that push pixels to Twitch / YouTube / Kick.

The desktop / browser apps you actually click "Go Live" in. For self-hosted ingest servers see Self-host Streaming Servers. For multi-destination broadcasting see Multi-streaming. For overlays / chat bots see Overlays & Alerts. For real-time video calls (the meeting / WebRTC side) see Real-time Video. For a quick screen-share recording instead of a live stream see Screen Recording. For protocols (RTMP / SRT / WHIP) see Streaming Protocols.

Free / OSS (the standard)

  • OBS Studio — GPL OSS; cross-platform; the universal streamer in 2026. Multi-scene, multi-source, plugins (StreamFX, OBS-Websocket, Move Transition, Advanced Scene Switcher, Source Record, OBS-Backgroundremoval), NVENC / QSV / VideoToolbox / VAAPI hardware encoding, OBS 30+ ships AV1 hardware encoding. The default for everyone — Twitch, YouTube, Kick, TikTok, Instagram. Free forever, no telemetry.
  • OBS Studio + StreamFX — free plugin pack; advanced filters, source mirroring, 3D transforms.
  • OBS-Websocket — free; remote control OBS over WebSocket; how Streamer.bot and Touch Portal talk to OBS.
  • Streamlabs Desktop (free) — closed source OBS fork; free; Twitch-leaning; built-in widgets/themes. Honest flag: telemetry, account login, ads, push notifications. Many streamers move back to vanilla OBS once they outgrow it.
  • Twitch Studio — closed source, free, Win/Mac; Twitch's first-party encoder; simpler than OBS, fewer features.
  • Prism Live Studio — free; popular with mobile-first streamers.
  • YouTube Live Encoder — free first-party; bare-bones.
  • GoXLR App — free closed; pairs with the GoXLR / Mini hardware mixer many streamers run.
  • NVIDIA Broadcast — free closed (NVIDIA RTX only); not a switcher, but ships AI noise removal, virtual background, eye-contact, auto-frame; pipe its virtual camera into OBS.
  • vMix — paid Win-only (free trial; Basic ~$60 → 4K Ultimate ~$1200 one-time, 2026 pricing). Pro live production: instant replay, chroma key, virtual sets, NDI / SRT in/out, vMix Call (WebRTC guests). The Windows pro live-production standard.
  • Wirecast (Telestream) — paid Win/Mac; broadcast-leaning; declining vs vMix.
  • TriCaster (Vizrt/NewTek) — paid hardware + software; broadcast-grade truck-in-a-box.
  • mimoLive — paid Mac-only; broadcast-grade Mac alternative to vMix.
  • Lightstream Studio — paid free tier; cloud-based browser switcher; no local CPU load.

Cloud / browser-based studios

  • Restream Studio — paid free tier; in-browser switcher, multi-guest WebRTC, multi-destination push (10+ destinations on free). Lowest-friction "go live with guests" tool.
  • StreamYard — paid free tier (watermark on free); polished, podcast-friendly.
  • Riverside.fm Studio — paid; recording-first but does live streaming.
  • Streamlabs Talk Studio — paid free tier.
  • Castr Studio — paid; multistream + cloud studio.
  • Melon (now Streamyard Mobile) — paid.

Mobile streaming

  • Streamlabs Mobile — free; iOS / Android.
  • Larix Broadcaster — free; pro RTMP/SRT mobile encoder; the secret weapon for IRL streamers.
  • Prism Live Studio Mobile — free.
  • IRL Pro (Android) — free; SRT / RTMP / RIST.
  • Twitch IRL App — free.

Free-with-Blackmagic-hardware

  • ATEM Software Control — free; the control surface for any Blackmagic ATEM Mini / Mini Pro / Constellation hardware switcher. The cheapest path to a dedicated hardware switcher experience (Mini Pro ~$595).
  • Blackmagic Web Presenter — free with hardware; turns any HDMI/SDI into a webcam.

Specialty / niche

  • CasparCG Server — see Live Production Switchers; broadcast graphics server.
  • vDome / Resolume — paid; VJ / projection-mapping live.
  • VDO.Ninja — free OSS; WebRTC peer-to-peer guest cams into OBS, no SFU; the "remote guest webcam in OBS" default.
  • NDI Tools — see Streaming Protocols; NDI Virtual Input + Scan Converter.

OBS plugin must-haves (2026)

  • OBS-Websocket — first-party in OBS 28+; required for Streamer.bot / Touch Portal control.
  • Advanced Scene Switcher — automate scene changes on triggers.
  • Move Transition — smooth source movement / micro-animations.
  • Source Record — record individual sources separately for multi-cam editing.
  • OBS-Backgroundremoval — local AI background remover (no green screen needed).
  • input-overlay — show keyboard / mouse / gamepad on stream.
  • obs-shaderfilter — GLSL shader filters per source.
  • Distroav (NDI Plugin for OBS) — NDI in/out (the modern continuation of obs-ndi).

Encoding presets quick reference

  • Twitch — RTMP, 1080p60 6000 kbps H.264 (or HEVC/AV1 for partners on enhanced broadcasting in 2026).
  • YouTube Live — RTMP/HLS, 1080p60 9000 kbps H.264; AV1 / HEVC supported in 2026.
  • Kick — RTMP; bitrate caps lifted vs Twitch; some streamers push 8000+ kbps.
  • TikTok Live — RTMP via TikTok Live Studio.

See Encoding & Codecs for hardware-encoder picks (NVENC vs QSV vs VideoToolbox).
