PBR Texture Libraries

Free and paid PBR material libraries — Poly Haven, AmbientCG, Quixel Megascans — for texturing scans and props.

After retopology and UV unwrap, the textures on the scan are usually the messy bit — uneven lighting, projected shadows, missing geometry. A library of clean PBR materials lets you replace or repaint sections, make hero renders, or simply prop up a scene. Pairs with Mesh Retopology (the topology side), 3D & Spatial Design Tools (Blender / Substance), 3D / WebGL (web delivery), and Photogrammetry Software for the original textures. The 2024–2026 default is Poly Haven for free CC0 PBR + HDRI, Quixel Megascans for free-with-Unreal-Epic-account, and AmbientCG for the long-tail catalogue.

Free / CC0 libraries

  • Poly Haven — free, CC0; ~1,500 PBR materials + ~700 HDRIs + ~500 models. The default free library; quality is uniformly high. Patreon-funded.
  • AmbientCG (formerly cc0textures) — free, CC0; ~2,000+ PBR textures; very long tail; older site, broader coverage.
  • TextureHaven — merged into Poly Haven.
  • 3DTextures.me — free, CC0; smaller; some unique materials.
  • ShareTextures — free; mixed licensing — read each entry.
  • CGBookcase — free, CC0 / personal; smaller curated set.
  • Texture Ninja / Texture Box (free section) — mixed; CC-BY for many.

Free for some users

  • Quixel Megascans — closed source; free for Unreal Engine 5 users (any project on UE5; Epic acquired Quixel). Massive scanned PBR library — surfaces, props, atlases, decals, plants, MetaHumans. The single biggest free PBR resource if you can use it under Epic's Unreal-tied license. Outside UE5, paid.
  • Adobe Substance 3D Assets — paid (subscription); included with Substance subscription.
  • Polygon (Synty Studios) — paid asset packs; free starter packs occasionally.

Hosted / paid libraries

  • Substance 3D Source (Adobe) — paid (subscription); thousands of procedural / scanned PBR materials.
  • CGAxis, 3DCollective — paid; older PBR libraries.
  • GameTextures, Texture Box, Texture Haven Pro — paid tiers.
  • Real Displacement Textures (RDT) — paid; high-quality displacement-heavy materials.

Texture authoring (paid)

  • Substance Painter (Adobe) — paid (subscription); the industry-standard PBR painter; bake from high-poly to low-poly, paint, smart materials, export to glTF / engine-ready.
  • Substance Designer (Adobe) — paid; node-based procedural material authoring.
  • Mari (Foundry) — paid; high-end texture painting; VFX standard.
  • 3D-Coat — paid; paint + retopo + UV.
  • Marmoset Toolbag — paid; baker + previewer.
  • Armor Paint — paid OSS (you pay for the binary); 3D paint app.

Texture authoring (free)

  • Blender Texture Paint — free, OSS; paint directly on 3D models in Blender; a credible Substance Painter alternative for most non-AAA work.
  • Material Maker — free, OSS Substance Designer alternative; node-based PBR.
  • Quixel Mixer — closed source, free (Epic-owned); texture-painting on meshes; in maintenance mode but still distributed.
  • xNormal — free; classic Windows normal-map baker.
  • Materialize (BoundingBoxSoftware) — free; convert a single photo into PBR maps.

Imaging / single-photo to PBR

  • Materialize — free Windows; convert photo → albedo / normal / displacement / roughness; quick and dirty.
  • PixaFlux — free; texture compositor.
  • AwesomeBump — free, OSS; Windows / Linux; convert photo to PBR maps.
  • Substance Sampler — paid; Adobe's photo-to-PBR (used to be Alchemist).

Map types you'll actually use

  • Albedo / Base Color — flat colour, lighting-free.
  • Normal — directional surface detail; OpenGL or DirectX convention.
  • Roughness / Glossiness — micro-surface light scattering.
  • Metalness — 0 / 1 PBR flag.
  • Ambient Occlusion (AO) — soft self-shadow.
  • Displacement / Height — geometric detail at render time.
  • Emissive — self-lit areas.
  • Opacity — transparency.

HDRI lighting

  • Poly Haven HDRIs — free, CC0; ~700 HDR environment maps; the default for IBL.
  • HDRI-Skies — paid; sky-only HDRIs.
  • HDRMaps — mixed.
  • NoEmotion HDRs — free.
