Shopping List Apps

AnyList, Bring!, OurGroceries, Cozi, Apple Reminders, Google Keep — shared lists that survive a household.

The household-shared shopping list page. For meal planning that generates lists see Meal Planning Apps; for the pantry / inventory layer see Pantry Inventory & Grocy; for self-hosted alternatives see Self-Hosted Recipe Managers.

The household-shared paid + free apps

  • AnyList — paid + free tier; long-running indie; iOS / Android / web; recipes + lists; the de-facto "we have a shared list" choice in many US households. Free tier covers most needs; Premium ($10/yr) adds list-merge / web access / family sharing.
  • Bring! — paid + free; Swiss; gorgeous design; iconic product icons (pictures of bell peppers, not text); strongest in EU; ad-free at low cost.
  • OurGroceries — paid + free; older UI; rock-solid sync; loyal user base.
  • Cozi Family — paid + free; whole-family suite (calendar + lists + chores); not just shopping.
  • Listonic — paid + free; popular in EU; aisle-grouped.
  • Out of Milk — paid + free; pantry + list; aging.
  • Tody — chore-flavored; tangentially shopping.

Free / built-in (the "good enough" tier)

  • Apple Reminders — fully free; iOS / Mac / web; shared lists work great; smart suggestions in iOS 17+; sections for grocery aisles. The right call for an Apple-only household.
  • Google Keep — fully free; Android / web; shared checkbox lists; widget on home screen.
  • Microsoft To Do — free; Outlook-bundled; shared lists; quieter than Keep / Reminders.
  • Notion — free + paid; can do this; usually overkill.
  • iOS / Android Notes app — works in a pinch; no merge logic.

Inside your recipe / meal-planning app

  • Mealie shopping lists (post-v1.4) — multi-user shopping lists per household; aisle grouping; works fine for FOSS households.
  • Tandoor shopping lists — best-of-class meal-plan-to-list conversion among self-hosted; aggregates duplicates correctly. See Self-Hosted Recipe Managers.
  • Grocy shopping list — pantry-aware; auto-fills against minimum stock; the killer feature is "you're below 2 cans of tomatoes, add 3 to next list."
  • Paprika — built-in; cross-device.
  • Mealime — built-in.
  • Plan to Eat — built-in.

Self-host / DIY

  • Mealie / Tandoor / Grocy — see above.
  • Listmonk — newsletter tool, occasionally repurposed; not really a shopping list. Mentioned because it shows up in searches; ignore for this purpose. See Marketing Automation.
  • Donetick — task / chore self-host; lists are an OK shopping-list approximation.
  • Vikunja — task manager; shared lists work fine. See Self-Hosted Personal Apps.
  • Nextcloud Tasks / Deck — works if Nextcloud is already running.

Voice-driven / Alexa / Google Home

  • "Alexa, add milk to the shopping list" — writes to Amazon's list app or AnyList / Bring! / OurGroceries via the right skill. The right call if you want voice-only adds while cooking.
  • Google Assistant + Keep — same idea on Google side.
  • Apple Siri + Reminders — works; sometimes surprising about which list it picks.
  • HA shopping list integration — Home Assistant has a built-in "shopping list" entity; voice from any HA-connected device writes to it; can sync to Mealie / Tandoor / Grocy.

Aisle-grouping / store-layout features

  • Bring! — strongest aisle defaults out of the box.
  • AnyList — categorizable; you customize.
  • Listonic — aisle-flavored.
  • Grocy — you map your store's actual aisle order; the correct answer for serious shoppers.
  • Apple Reminders — sections work fine if you don't mind some manual setup.

Family / household sharing

  • AnyList — Premium required for family sharing; otherwise everyone sees one list.
  • Bring! — free family sharing.
  • OurGroceries — free family sharing.
  • Apple Reminders — free shared lists across iCloud household.
  • Google Keep — free shared notes / lists.
  • Cozi — kid-friendly family suite.

What "good shopping list" needs

  • Real-time multi-device sync. Spouse adds milk while you're at the store; you see it instantly. Most do this; some are surprisingly slow (looking at you, Out of Milk).
  • Aisle / category grouping. Shopping a flat list zigzags the store. Grouping cuts trips by 30%.
  • Recurring "we always need" items. AnyList does this; OurGroceries does this.
  • Recipe-to-list ingestion. Mealie / Tandoor / Paprika / Mealime / Plan to Eat all do this.
  • Voice add. Alexa / Siri / HA.
  • Receipt scan. Almost nobody does this well; ignore.
