AnyType, AppFlowy & AFFiNE — Notion-shape OSS

Free / OSS Notion alternatives — block-based, database-flavoured, local-first.

The "Notion but FOSS" cohort. Block-based editors, database views, growing AI features, and (importantly) data you actually own. Pair with pkm-overview-methodologies; contrast with pkm-obsidian-deep and pkm-logseq-deep; see also selfhost-notes-wiki, prod-note-taking-consumer.

AnyType ★

  • Free OSS (Any Source Available License — open-source-flavoured but not OSI; community publishes binaries).
  • Local-first p2p sync. Notes stored on your devices; any-grade encryption; sync via the project's any-sync infrastructure or self-hosted any-sync-node.
  • Notion-shape blocks with Object types and Sets — feels like Notion in shape, but offline-capable and personal.
  • 2024-26 maturity: version 0.40+ stabilised; mobile is good; offline support is the differentiator.
  • Self-host any-sync — community guides exist; non-trivial but possible.

Pick AnyType if: you want Notion's shape, refuse the cloud, and accept the slightly idiosyncratic license.

AppFlowy ★

  • Free OSS (AGPL).
  • Notion-shape with Pages, Databases (Grid/Board/Calendar), and inline blocks.
  • Self-host AppFlowy Cloud (AGPL backend) for sync; local-only also supported.
  • AppFlowy AI — built-in LLM features (summarise, ask, write); 2024-26 push.
  • Flutter — desktop + mobile; cross-platform from one codebase.

Pick AppFlowy if: Notion shape, fully OSS, willing to run your own sync server (or use the hosted AppFlowy Cloud free tier).

AFFiNE ★

  • Free OSS (MIT for client; AGPL for server).
  • Whiteboard + docs + database in one app — closer to Heptabase + Notion than pure Notion.
  • Block-based; edgeless mode for spatial canvas.
  • Self-host AFFiNE Server for sync.
  • AI features (Pro plan); also work locally.

Pick AFFiNE if: you want a whiteboard + docs hybrid; you like Heptabase / Miro vibes but want OSS.

Where they fit vs. Obsidian / Logseq / Joplin

  • Notion-shape (block + DB) people — these three; not Obsidian / Logseq / Joplin.
  • Markdown-on-disk fundamentalists — go to Obsidian / Logseq / Joplin / Org-mode. These three use proprietary file formats (markdown export exists, but isn't the source of truth).
  • Whiteboard-leaning — AFFiNE (or Heptabase paid).
  • Mobile-first sync without paying — AnyType is the strongest of these.

Notion (paid + free) — the reference point

  • Notion is the dominant proprietary tool in this shape; very polished; very locked in. Free tier generous for personal. See prod-note-taking-consumer.
  • Notion Sites for publishing; Notion AI as paid add-on.
  • Migration away is hard — Markdown export drops blocks, databases become CSVs. Plan for this if you start there.

Other proprietary peers (mention only)

  • Coda — paid; doc-database hybrid.
  • ClickUp — paid; business-task-flavoured.
  • Capacities — paid; object-oriented Notion-shape; smaller community.

Common gotchas

  • DB-shape PKM has migration cost. Markdown-on-disk tools survive any vendor; database tools do not.
  • AI features — easy to over-rely; local-first is rare in this category. AnyType + AppFlowy AI are early; expect rough edges.
  • Mobile parity varies — AnyType strongest, AFFiNE weakest as of 2026.

Pick this if…

  • You want Notion shape + FOSS: AppFlowy first; AnyType if local-first p2p matters; AFFiNE if you also want a whiteboard.
  • You want Notion + you don't mind paying: Notion — see prod-note-taking-consumer.
  • You want markdown-on-disk: these aren't your tools — go to pkm-obsidian-deep or pkm-logseq-deep.
  • You want a whiteboard-first PKM: AFFiNE (FOSS) or Heptabase (paid).
  • You're a team: Outline / BookStack / Wiki.js — see selfhost-notes-wiki.
