VFX, Motion Graphics & Compositing

Blender, Natron, Fusion, After Effects, Nuke — node-based and layer-based compositing, keying, motion graphics.

The "make a shot that didn't exist" tools — keying, tracking, comp, motion graphics, simulation. For 3D modeling specifically see 3D & WebGL. For grading see Color Grading. For straight cuts see Video NLE Editors.

Free / OSS compositing

  • Blender — GPL OSS; the swiss-army-knife: 3D modeling, animation, simulation, plus a full VSE (video sequence editor) and compositor node graph. Geometry Nodes, Cycles renderer, EEVEE realtime. The OSS center of gravity for 3D-for-video. Cross-platform.
  • Natron — GPL OSS; Nuke-shaped node compositor; OpenFX plugin host; runs Nuke-style scripts. Less actively developed than it once was but still works in 2026.
  • DaVinci Resolve Fusion (free) — closed source, bundled into Resolve free tier; full node-based compositor that historically was its own $1000 app. Powerful 2D/3D comp, particles, paint, planar tracker. The most underrated free VFX tool.
  • GIMP G'MIC — frame-by-frame filtering; niche but useful for stylization passes.
  • Synfig Studio — GPL OSS 2D vector animation.
  • Adobe After Effects — subscription; the industry standard for motion graphics and 2D comp; massive plugin ecosystem (Element 3D, Trapcode, Red Giant Universe).
  • Foundry Nuke — subscription / rental; the film VFX standard; node-based; Nuke Indie ($499/year, 4K cap, no studio licensing) is the affordable on-ramp; Nuke Non-commercial is free for learning.
  • SideFX Houdini — subscription / one-time; procedural everything: simulation, FX, motion graphics. Houdini Apprentice is free for learning.
  • Cinema 4D — paid; motion graphics standard, deep AE integration.
  • Maxon Red Giant Trapcode / Magic Bullet — AE plugins; subscription.

3D for video

  • Blender — see above; default OSS pick. Cross-link 3D & WebGL for web-targeted 3D.
  • Cinema 4D — paid; motion graphics darling.
  • Maya — paid; character animation, film pipeline.
  • Houdini — paid; procedural FX, sims.
  • Unreal Engine — free for film virtual production; Sequencer is now a credible NLE replacement on virtual sets; LED-wall workflows.

Motion capture

  • Move.ai — paid; markerless mocap from phone video; impressive 2026 results.
  • Plask Motion — paid free trial; AI markerless mocap.
  • Rokoko Smartsuit Studio — free software, paid hardware suit; mocap pipeline into Blender / Unreal.
  • DeepMotion Animate 3D — paid; web-based AI mocap.

Tracking & matchmoving

  • PFTrack, 3DEqualizer, SynthEyes — paid pro matchmove.
  • Blender's built-in tracker — surprisingly capable for 2D / object track.
  • Mocha Pro (Boris FX) — paid; the planar tracker that ships into AE / Premiere / Resolve.

Title / motion-graphics templates

  • AE Templates (Envato, Motion Array) — paid marketplaces.
  • Resolve Fusion Templates — community on reactor / Reactor package manager; many free.
  • Lottie — for web-deployed motion; see Animation.

Patterns

  • Blender for 3D, Resolve Fusion for finishing comp is a fully-free pro pipeline.
  • Stay in linear / scene-referred for compositing math; convert to display only at the end.
  • Render with EXRs, not pre-graded H.264; preserves headroom.
  • Use Cryptomatte for matte extraction in comp; both Blender and Fusion support it.

Pick this if…

  • Default OSS VFX: Blender + Resolve Fusion.
  • Industry MoGraph: After Effects.
  • Industry film VFX: Nuke (Indie if budget-tight).
  • Procedural FX / sims: Houdini.
  • Virtual production / LED wall: Unreal Engine.
  • Phone-only mocap: Move.ai.
  • OSS Nuke shape: Natron.
