Emulators (Sony)

DuckStation, PCSX2, RPCS3, Vita3K — the PlayStation lineage from PS1 to PS Vita.

The Sony console emulator field. For Nintendo see Nintendo emulators. For Sega / arcade / DOS see Misc / PC / Arcade. For the multi-system frontends that wrap most of these via libretro see Multi-system emulators. For ROM legality see Game legal nuance.

The 2024–26 reality: the Sony emulator field is unusually healthy — Sony has not litigated the way Nintendo has. PS1, PS2, and PS3 emulation are essentially solved problems. PS Vita is rapidly catching up. PSP via PPSSPP has been excellent for years (see Mobile gaming).

PS1

  • ★ ★ DuckStation — CC-BY-NC-ND OSS (note license restrictions on redistribution); Win/Mac/Linux/Android. The best PS1 emulator. PGXP geometry correction, true-color rendering, MSAA, gamepad support, achievement integration, libretro core variant. Pairs with RetroAchievements.
  • Beetle PSX HW — GPL-2.0 OSS; libretro core; Mednafen-derived. Highly accurate; pick this if RetroArch-only and you want maximum accuracy.
  • ePSXe — closed freeware; legacy. Don't pick in 2026.
  • PCSX-ReARMed — GPL-2.0 OSS; libretro core; the lightweight default on Pi / handhelds. Lower accuracy than DuckStation but very fast.

PS2

  • ★ ★ PCSX2 — GPL-3.0 OSS; Win/Mac/Linux. The PS2 emulator. Massive accuracy and performance gains over the past three years; the QT UI replaced the legacy WX UI. Per-game settings, widescreen patches, texture replacement, save-state rewind, RetroAchievements.
  • AetherSX2 — closed source; Android PS2 emulator that was sunset in 2023 due to harassment. Forks: NetherSX2 (community continuation, Android) — flag that the original is no longer being updated and forks vary in quality.
  • Play! — long-running OSS PS2 emu; PCSX2 has overtaken it almost everywhere but useful on platforms PCSX2 doesn't target.

PS3

  • RPCS3 — GPL-2.0 OSS; Win/Linux/Mac (Apple Silicon support landed 2023+). The PS3 emulator. Famously high system requirements but compatibility is excellent for a console most people thought would never be emulated. Per-game configurations, custom shaders, real-time clock spoofing.
  • Honest flag: needs your own PS3's dev_flash files for some games. Performance is CPU-bound; expect to need a recent x86 CPU with AVX-512 or strong AVX2 for many titles.

PSP

  • PPSSPP — GPLv2 OSS; Win/Mac/Linux/Android/iOS (post-EU-DMA + Apple policy reversal). The PSP emulator; mature and excellent on every platform including phones. See Mobile gaming & emulators for the iOS angle.

PS Vita

  • Vita3K — ISC OSS; Win/Mac/Linux/Android. PS Vita emulation; compatibility is improving fast in 2024-26. Many big titles now playable, others still require workarounds. Active dev.

Pick this if…

  • PS1, default: DuckStation.
  • PS1, libretro / RetroArch only: Beetle PSX HW.
  • PS2: PCSX2.
  • PS2, Android: NetherSX2 — but check the community for the current trusted fork.
  • PS3: RPCS3.
  • PSP, anywhere: PPSSPP.
  • Vita: Vita3K.
