Breathwork & Vagal Tone

Breathwrk, Othership, Apollo Neuro — and the free breath patterns that do most of the work.

Breathwork is a small but legitimate category in 2026 — slow, paced breathing demonstrably shifts HRV / vagal tone within minutes, and a few apps + cheap hardware do this well. But most of the value is in 5 minutes of slow paced breathing daily, which you don't need an app for.

Sister sections: Meditation Apps, HRV & Heart Rate, Mental Health Journaling, Apple Watch, Yoga & Mobility.

Breathwork apps

  • ★ ★ Breathwrk — paid (~$5/mo / $60/yr) + free; iOS / Android; the most-recommended breathwork app; 4-7-8, box breath, Wim Hof, energizing / calming patterns; haptic feedback; Apple Watch app.
  • Apple Breathe / Mindfulness app — free with Apple Watch; built-in; haptic-guided one-minute sessions; integrates into HealthKit.
  • Othership — paid + free; breathwork-class-shaped; Toronto sauna brand parent.
  • Insight Timer (breathing exercises section) — free + paid; many community-uploaded breath sessions. See Meditation Apps.
  • Wim Hof Method app — paid + free; Wim Hof's specific breathing protocol.
  • Calm / Headspace — both have breath-focused sessions.
  • iBreathe — free; minimalist breath timer.

Free practices (no app needed)

You don't need an app for any of these:

  • Box breathing 4-4-4-4 — inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4. Used by Navy SEALs.
  • 4-7-8 — inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8. Andrew Weil's protocol.
  • Coherent breathing 5.5 / 5.5 — 5.5s in, 5.5s out (~5.5 breaths/min); the canonical "HRV biofeedback" pace.
  • Physiological sigh — double inhale through nose, long exhale through mouth (Andrew Huberman). Two of these resets sympathetic activation surprisingly fast.
  • Wim Hof breathing — 30 power breaths + breath-hold + recovery; debated mechanism; popular.
  • Bhastrika / Kapalabhati pranayama — yogic breathing.

HRV biofeedback hardware

  • HeartMath Inner Balance — paid (~$129) hardware + paid sub; ear-clip / Lightning sensor; "coherence" training; HRV biofeedback. The most-clinically-cited HRV-biofeedback consumer hardware.
  • emWave2 — paid; HeartMath family; standalone device.
  • Polar H10 + HRV4Biofeedback — Marco Altini's app (paid) — pairs with any chest strap; cheaper, more open. See HRV.
  • Elite HRV — has a biofeedback mode; see HRV.

Vagus / nervous-system wearables

  • Apollo Neuro — paid (~$350) + paid sub option; vibration wearable claiming to "tone" the nervous system; mixed evidence; popular in 2024-26 wellness influencer scene.
  • Sensate — paid (~$300); chest-placed vibration device.
  • Nurosym — paid; vagus-nerve electrical stimulation; clinical-leaning.
  • TENS / vagus-stim devices (e.g., Pulsetto, NEUVANA Xen) — paid; consumer vagus-nerve electrical stimulation; verify claims independently.

The evidence-base on these wearables is mixed-to-weak. Slow paced breathing is free and demonstrably effective; the vibration / electrical wearables are early-stage.

Cold / heat exposure (vagal-tone-adjacent)

  • Cold exposure (cold shower / plunge / face dunk) — well-documented vagal stimulation. Free.
  • Sauna — heat-shock protein; cardiovascular benefit; widely cited.
  • Wim Hof Method (cold + breath) — covered above.
  • Plunge / Morozko / Ice Barrel / chest freezer — DIY cold plunge; $200-5000 range.
  • Sauna at home / barrel / infrared sauna — paid hardware; $1000-5000+.

Sleep + breathwork integration

  • See Sleep Tracking.
  • Bedtime 4-7-8 before sleep is a common recommendation; many sleep apps have a breathwork pre-sleep mode.

Practical guidance

  • 5 min/day of any slow-paced breathing delivers most of the benefit. App is optional.
  • Resonance frequency (your specific HRV-max breathing rate) is usually 5-7 breaths/min; an HRV biofeedback device finds yours precisely.
  • Don't expect quick fixes from the vibration / electrical wearables. If anything, double down on the breathing for 60 days and add the gadget after.
  • Coherent breathing during a stressful meeting is the one technique many practitioners say is the most useful single tool they have.

Cost / license honesty

  • Breathwrk — ~$60/yr.
  • HeartMath Inner Balance — ~$129 hardware + sub for some content.
  • Apollo Neuro / Sensate / Nurosym — $300-500 hardware; varies on subs.
  • Apple Breathe — free with Apple Watch.
  • DIY breathwork — free.

Pick this if…
