ROM Management & Metadata

ClrMamePro, RomVault, Skraper, Steam ROM Manager, No-Intro / Redump / TOSEC datasets.

The unglamorous middle layer between "I have a folder of files" and "my frontend shows artwork and runs the right core." For frontends that consume the output (cover art, gamelist.xml) see Multi-system emulators. For per-console emulators see Nintendo, Sony, Misc / Sega / Arcade. For ROM legality see Game legal nuance.

The reality: most of the work in setting up a retro library is not picking the emulator — it's verifying that your dumps match a known-good hash, naming files consistently, and scraping artwork that matches the right region / revision.

ROM verification & deduplication

  • ClrMamePro — free Win (donation-encouraged); the long-running ROM manager. Reads DAT files (No-Intro / Redump / TOSEC), verifies hashes, splits / merges / non-merged sets for MAME, fixes naming. Crusty but unmatched in features.
  • RomVault — free Win + paid donor tier (Premium); modern UI alternative to ClrMamePro. Better at large libraries, multi-DAT projects.
  • Romcenter — free Win; lighter alternative.
  • MAME's own verifyroms — built into MAME; the source of truth for arcade sets.

DAT files (the hash datasets)

  • No-Intro — community-maintained DATs of cartridge-based consoles (NES, SNES, GBA, DS, etc.). The default for cart systems.
  • Redump — community-maintained DATs of disc-based consoles (PS1, PS2, Saturn, Dreamcast, GameCube, Wii, etc.). The verification standard for disc dumps.
  • TOSEC — older, broader, less curated; archival.
  • MAME DATs — version-locked to MAME release; ship with each MAME version.
  • DAT-o-MATIC — No-Intro's web frontend.

Artwork & metadata scraping

  • Skraper — free closed; Win/Mac/Linux. The de-facto art scraper for ES / Batocera / RecalBox / RetroPie. Pulls box art, wheel logos, screenshots, fanart, video previews from ScreenScraper.fr. Fast bulk processing.
  • ScreenScraper.fr — community art database; account required for higher rate limits. The single best source of retro media; donate / contribute back.
  • EmulationStation Desktop Edition built-in scraper — see Multi-system emulators; ES-DE has solid built-in scraping that mostly removes the need for Skraper for ES-DE users.
  • Steam Grid DB — community art for Steam-shaped game tiles (used heavily by Steam ROM Manager, Playnite); see Linux / SteamOS / Deck and PC launchers.
  • LaunchBox Games Database — paid metadata source for LaunchBox users.

Steam library integration

  • Steam ROM Manager — free OSS; Win/Mac/Linux. Adds non-Steam shortcuts (emulators, Heroic, Lutris, individual ROMs) to your Steam library with proper artwork from SteamGridDB. Essential on Steam Deck. Profiles per emulator with parser templates.
  • Playnite — free OSS Win launcher (see PC launchers) — handles ROM library + storefronts in one app on Windows.

Curated game collections (controversial / flag)

  • eXoDOS / eXoWin3x / eXoArcade / eXoConsole — community-curated, frontend-ready collections preconfigured for DOSBox / WinUAE / etc. Excellent quality. Honest flag: distributing the actual ROMs/games is legally grey; most of these projects are "instructions + scripts" rather than the data itself.
  • Internet Archive game collections — see Game preservation & archive. Some collections (abandonware) are legally tolerated; many are not. Check on a per-title basis.

Pick this if…

  • Verifying a retro library: ClrMamePro or RomVault + No-Intro + Redump DATs.
  • Scraping artwork for ES / Batocera: Skraper (account at ScreenScraper.fr).
  • Adding emulators to Steam (especially on Steam Deck): Steam ROM Manager.
  • Windows all-in-one (library + storefronts + ROMs): Playnite.
  • MAME arcade sets: match your DAT to your MAME version exactly.
