Speaking Practice — italki, Tandem, HelloTalk

Live tutors marketplaces, language exchange apps, conversation practice — the cheapest reliable path to real output.

Output is the leg most learners skip. The minute you can string sentences together, you need real-human practice — for a fraction of the cost of a traditional class. italki dominates because the marketplace works. See AI Tutors for the LLM-supplement angle.

★ ★ italki — the tutor marketplace

  • ★ ★ italki — paid; https://italki.com.
    • Marketplace of native-speaker tutors.
    • Community Tutors ($5-15/hr) — informal, conversation-focused; great for output practice.
    • Professional Teachers ($15-40/hr) — credentialed; structured lessons, exam prep.
    • 150+ languages including rare ones.
    • The cheapest reliable path to real human conversation. There's no free OSS equivalent for live human tutors — pay for it.
    • Trial-lesson pricing; book single 30-minute or 60-minute lessons.
    • Honest weakness: tutor quality varies; read reviews; do trial lesson before committing.
  • Most learners do 1-2 lessons/week; even 1/month at intermediate is meaningful.

Preply

  • Preply — paid; competitor to italki.
    • Aggressive subscription model (you commit to weekly hours).
    • Tutor pool slightly smaller; pricing similar.
    • Honest take: italki's pay-per-lesson model is friendlier for most.

Verbling

  • Verbling — paid; smaller competitor.
    • Vetted teachers; slightly higher quality bar than italki Community.
    • Smaller pool, fewer rare languages.

Cambly

  • Cambly — paid; English-focused; on-demand tutors (no scheduling needed).
    • Mostly for ESL learners.
    • Conversation-only.

★ HelloTalk — language exchange chat

  • HelloTalk — free + paid Premium (~$7/mo); the most-active language-exchange app.
    • You teach English (or whatever) and they teach you their language.
    • Chat-first (text + voice notes); video-calls less common than tutor sites.
    • In-app correction tools: highlight a sentence and the native speaker rewrites it.
    • 2024-26 added AI grammar correction.
    • Honest weakness: many users use it as a dating app; the flirt-spam is real for women in particular language pairs.

★ Tandem

  • Tandem — free + paid Pro; HelloTalk competitor.
    • Cleaner UI; vetting feature reduces spam slightly.
    • Same shape: chat / voice / video with native speakers.

Speakly

  • Speakly — paid; structured speaking practice with AI + human elements; smaller language list.

★ Discord language-exchange servers

  • Refold language servers (one per language) — free; active; learner-focused.
  • r/learn[language] linked Discords — free; per-language communities.
  • Language-exchange megaservers — search Disboard for "language exchange [lang]".
  • Honest take: the free Discord ecosystem replaces a lot of paid app value if you're self-driven.

Conversation Exchange

  • ConversationExchange.com — old-school free site; pen-pal + voice-call partners; smaller but less spammy than HelloTalk.

Speak (AI-tutor hybrid)

  • Speak — paid; AI English tutor; Korea-strong; expanding to other languages 2024-26. Branded as tutor app, mostly LLM under the hood. See AI Tutors.

Pimsleur (audio-only output)

  • Pimsleur — paid; audio-only method; forces output every 30 seconds. Good for commutes. See Mainstream Apps.

How much speaking is "enough"?

  • Beginner output: even 30 minutes/week of italki at A2-B1 unlocks a year of passive vocab.
  • Intermediate: 1 lesson/week + journaling in the language + voice-note exchange.
  • Advanced: domain-specific output (work, debate, writing).
  • The Refold "delay output" stance is debated — even early output (with a kind tutor) doesn't fossilise errors as much as folklore claims.

Voice journaling alternative

If you can't afford / find tutors:

  • Record yourself speaking on a topic for 5 minutes daily.
  • Transcribe with Whisper (free). See Transcription.
  • Feed transcript to Claude / GPT for corrections.
  • Re-record fixing corrections.
  • Repeat.

This is genuinely effective for production fluency without a human partner.

Cost comparison (rough, 2026)

  • italki Community Tutor $7/hr × 4/month = $28/mo.
  • italki Professional $20/hr × 4/month = $80/mo.
  • Preply weekly subscription ~$60-100/mo.
  • HelloTalk Premium $7/mo (chat / language exchange).
  • AI tutor (Talkpal / Speak) $10-30/mo.
  • Whisper + Claude self-coached ~$5/mo for AI calls.

Pick this if…
