Console Modding & Homebrew

Atmosphère (Switch), Luma3DS, Wii Homebrew, PSP / Vita / PS3 CFW — running unsigned code on real hardware.

The "modify the console you own to run homebrew, backups, and emulators" landscape. Different from PC emulation (see Multi-system emulators etc.). For dedicated retro-gaming hardware (Mister, Anbernic, etc.) see Mister FPGA & Analogue and Handhelds. For custom firmware on modern retro handhelds (Anbernic / Miyoo / etc.) see Retro handheld firmware. For the legal landscape see Game legal nuance.

The 2024–26 reality: Switch homebrew is mature (Atmosphère is Sysnand-stable for compatible hardware revisions), 3DS / DS Lite / Wii / Wii U are essentially solved (Luma3DS, Twilight Menu++, Letterbomb, Tiramisu), PSP and Vita are forever-jailbroken, PS3 CFW is broadly accessible, and PS4 is jailbreakable on specific firmware. The Switch 2 (mid-2025+) is fresh enough that homebrew is early-stage as of writing.

Switch (original Switch / Switch Lite / OLED)

  • Atmosphère — GPL OSS; the de facto Switch CFW. Runs on hardware-modded units (Erista 2017-era; Mariko / OLED need a mod-chip). Sysnand or Emunand modes; Sysnand on newer chips needs a chip install (Picofly / Hwfly / SX Core). Honest flag: hardware mods void warranty, brick risk on bad install, and online play with CFW is a Nintendo-ban risk. Use only on a console you accept the risk of losing.
  • Hekate / NyxQuake — Switch bootloader; pairs with Atmosphère.
  • Tinfoil / DBI — installer apps; legality varies by use.

3DS (mature)

  • Luma3DS — GPL OSS; the universal 3DS CFW. Runs on every revision (Old / New 3DS / 2DS). Mature, low-risk. Free and well-documented at 3ds.hacks.guide.
  • Twilight Menu++ — DS / DSiware launcher for 3DS / DSi.
  • GodMode9 — multipurpose 3DS file manager.

DS / DSi / DS Lite

  • TWiLight Menu++ + NDS-Bootstrap — DS-mode launcher for DSi / 3DS.
  • R4 / Acekard / AceKard 2i / SuperCard DSTwo flashcarts — paid hardware (~$15-50); the original DS-mode flashcart paths.
  • DSi: HiyaCFW + Unlaunch — DSi homebrew.

Wii / Wii U / Wii Mini

  • Wii: LetterBomb / str2hax / FlashHax / BlueBomb — depending on system menu version. Followed by HackMii Installer + Homebrew Channel.
  • Wii: Aroma / Tiramisu (for Wii U vWii) — Wii U's Wii-mode hacks.
  • Wii U: Tiramisu — current Wii U CFW (Aroma path).
  • CemuLib for Wii U — emulator-side; see Nintendo emulators.

GameCube

  • Swiss — free OSS; the GameCube homebrew swiss-army-knife. Boots from SD card via SD Gecko or memory card adapter.
  • Nintendont — free OSS; runs GameCube games from a Wii / Wii U.

PSP / PS Vita

  • PSP CFW — long-solved; ARK / PRO CFW; runs ISO + homebrew. ChickHEN / 6.61 PRO-C Infinity for permanent.
  • PS Vita — ★ HENkaku Ensō + Adrenaline (PSP emulation in Vita); supports up to FW 3.74. Newer firmwares (3.75+) require HENkaku-shape rather than persistent Ensō; verify your firmware first.
  • PSTV — Vita-shape; same CFW path.

PS3 / PS4 / PS5

  • PS3 — CFW broadly accessible. Models with non-CFW-friendly firmware can use HEN (Hybrid). PS3HEN.
  • PS4 — jailbreakable up to specific firmware versions (commonly ≤11.00 in 2024-25); requires the right firmware to be on the console before jailbreaking. Honest flag: factory updates close the door.
  • PS5 — jailbreak available for specific firmware (4.x → 5.50 range historically; verify the current state). Limited; expect features to lag behind PS4 jailbreak.

Xbox / Xbox 360 / Xbox One

  • Original Xbox: softmod via game saves — long mature.
  • Xbox 360: RGH (Reset Glitch Hack) / JTAG — hardware mods.
  • Xbox One / Series: homebrew via Dev Mode; CFW does not exist for these in any usable form.

Tools / installers / docs

  • ★ ★ hacks.guide network — free; community-curated, exhaustive guides for Switch, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, DSi, Vita. The single best starting point for any console you're considering modding. 3ds.hacks.guide, wii.hacks.guide, switch.hacks.guide, etc.
  • GBAtemp — free; the long-running console-modding forum.
  • r/SwitchHacks, r/3dshacks, r/Vitahacks — free; per-platform Reddit communities.
  • Hardware mods (chips) void warranty. Some are reversible (chip removal); some aren't.
  • Online play with CFW is a ban risk — Nintendo bans aggressively, Sony less so historically, Microsoft also bans on Live.
  • Buying pre-modded consoles is legal in most jurisdictions but warranties are gone.
  • Distributing copyrighted ROMs is not legal; backups of games you own are tolerated in most US case law but jurisdiction-dependent.
  • Console software updates can brick a CFW install — never auto-update a modded console.

Pick this if…

  • Modding a 3DS: Luma3DS via 3ds.hacks.guide.
  • Modding a Wii / Wii U: wii.hacks.guide / Tiramisu.
  • Modding a Switch (Erista, 2017-era): Atmosphère via switch.hacks.guide.
  • Modding a Switch (Mariko / OLED / Switch 2): be aware you need a chip; understand the risk.
  • Modding a PSP / Vita: ARK CFW (PSP) / Ensō (Vita).
  • Modding a PS3: PS3HEN.
  • Modding a PS4 / PS5: you must already be on the right firmware; check current jailbreak status before buying anything.
